I-Team: Analysis of Ishaq Williams’ Official Visit to Syracuse

Stud defensive end Ishaq Williams visited the Syracuse campus this weekend. A kid with SU, Notre Dame and Penn State in his final three stands to be the most important recruit of the Doug Marrone Era. He might be the most heralded Syracuse recruit since Donovan McNabb 15 years ago. Ishaq’s potential impact is so large, The Fizz has decided to assemble “Ishaq’s I-Team” to cover his decision over the next six weeks.

The Fizz is here to confirm what we know about the trip to the Salt City this weekend.

  1. He was in attendance at the Colgate-‘Cuse game on Saturday, taking in the absolute beatdown of the Raiders in the Dome.
  2. He spent a considerable amount of time with Chandler Jones. Makes sense. One 6-4 natural athlete on defense hangs out with a fellow 6-4 natural athlete on defense.
  3. From what we can draw, he stole zero TV’s from anyone’s South Campus apartment (hey, didn’t think we had to vett these things either).

Williams also visited Notre Dame in what Irish Sports Daily called a “whirlwind week of recruiting” for the class of ’11 big fish.

So where does the Orange stand right now? The Fizz left a message with his Lincoln High School seeking comment. What we can speculate on is how much other schools might play into the race.

Notre Dame is trying to make a big push for Williams with steaks and fancy dinners. Everything seems in order until you get to this quote from Williams:

“I went to the team meetings and then I watched practice. I stayed with the outside linebackers. I perfectly understand what my role would be. My only question is how I‚Äôm going to adjust to it in college.‚Äù

That’s right! Notre Dame runs a 3-4 defense, which would require a shift for Williams. For the record, he says he is more than willing to move to that spot, but wouldn’t he want to stick with his bread has butter? Shafer’s blitzing 4-3 would be great for the star.

He’s been around State College plenty and Linebacker U would seem an incredible option. But you can’t help but think of all the pluses in Syracuse’s direction. His parents are SU alum, Marrone is from his area, and Pinstripe Bowl in Ishaq’s neighborhood looming over everyone’s head. Syracuse is on the surprisingly short list for a reason.

Wikipedia says SU product Marv Albert went to Lincoln High School as well. All our ears are open for a “YES!” call by the end of the official signg period.
