Another Mungro? Speedy, Diminutive RB Charles Davis Commits to Syracuse

Indy Star

Update: Thursday, 11:25a. In a mysterious twist, apparently Davis never committed to Syracuse. Read The Fizz’s theories on what may have happened.

Syracuse’s list of 2013 commitments just added more speed. SU nabbed it’s sixth verbal of the class on Tuesday as Milford Academy (Milford, CT) RB Charles Davis committed to Tyrone Wheatley. Scout and Rivals both give Davis two-stars, but his tape shows unbelievable quickness and an instinctive ability to find open space. We also know Doug Marrone has been looking to add speed wherever possible to his roster, and Davis is clocked at a blazing 4.42 40.

Syracuse beat out Missouri, Clemson, Mississippi State, and Kentucky to land the Avon, Indiana product. The Orange was certainly helped by the pipeline between Milford and the Hill. The private school has been an early stop for many SU players, like Ashton Broyld last season. While it’s easy to look at the star ratings and dismiss him as a mediocre prospect, the interest he garnered from big programs says plenty about his talent.

Davis is a small back, which may explain why he wasn’t highly rated. At 5’9” 182 lbs., the concern might be that he’s too undersized to shake things up at the college level. But he’s a Danny Woodhead-type ball carrier with fantastic lateral speed.

Once the hit is delivered, it doesn’t take much to bring him down, but Davis’ trick is simply outrunning the contact. It worked to the tune of 1,345 rushing yards and 10 rushing touchdowns while at Avon HS in Indiana. Plus, with a growing offensive line supplemented by bulldozers like Omari Palmer, CD may have a little extra room to run when he finally suits up at SU.

Davis also doubles as a receiver on option plays, making him even an even more versatile commitment. Since he’s so quick, he’s adept at getting open for a quick pass and has lined up in the end-around formation to catch short passes against the sideline.

Tyrone Wheatley has been a beast on the recruiting trail of late, but he was just one of two big names that helped sell Davis on SU. Davis says he has been talking to another undersized Orange runningback who made it all the way to the NFL – former Colt James Mungro.

“I know their program has a rich tradition of running backs. I know I can come in and contribute and build my own legacy. They’ve had Floyd Little and Ernie Davis and Jim Brown and James Mungro. [Mungro] played for the Colts and lives in my neighborhood. He’s helped me with this recruiting stuff.”

It really does all come down to networking. Syracuse grabs a talented ball carrier who had offers from better known programs thanks to some recruiting magic from Tyrone Wheatley, the Milford connection, and a little help from an alumni with NFL experience.

    Highlights on TNIAAM:

I don’t know if it’s accurate to say it doesn’t take much to bring him down. He’s a really strong kid and shows the ability to deliver a hit on a few plays. On that one run up the middle toward the end of the second video he’s practically taking the whole defense with him. It’s just that he finds a way to never get touched – he kind of reminds me of Mike Hart in that way.

I think if he adds a bit more weight to his frame this year he’ll be read when he shows up on campus next year.

James Mungro was hardly in the fast category of past SU running backs. He did have quick feet but fast was n’t one of his assets It might be fun to see whether George Morris and Davis duke it out in the 40. I’m also thinking that Gulley would have a say about straight up speed.

    seems a little noel devine(ish)

  6. Lou R says:

This kid has got game like the other running back from Milford who went to Pitt and is now a starter with the Philadelphia Beagles… GO CUSE

  7. Russell MacEachern says:

Maybe another lil Joe Morris is what he reminds me of!!I can dream can’t I?..

  8. Russell MacEachern says:

@Norma…thanks for the info on U-State/D-St. QB…it looks like Dougie missed on him!!

  9. AnaheimOrange says:

I’m with Russell! Why don’t many folks cite Joe Morris as an undersized RB that also happened to be one of SU’s most explosive? #47 was a great SU running back.

  10. Ron says:

The reason that we have pads on the wall that surrounds the field inside the dome is because little Joe Morris broke around the right corner for a big gain and was pushed into it before the pads went up.

Joe’s size didn’t stop the Giants from drafting him either.

If this kid is that good, then we ought to be in for a treat when he finally comes to the Cuse to play.

We need to recognize the job that Coach Wheatly has done and give James Mungro a huge thank you for helping to beat out 2 schools from the Big 12,one from the ACC and another from the SEC for getting this kid to come to Syracuse.

Job well done coach keep up the great work.

    GO CUSE

  11. Frank says:

You may want to rethink this non- commit per TNIAAM.

  12. chad says:

Frank beat me to it but Syracuse.com says the kid hasn’t committed. He posted it on his twitter and facebook but he either didn’t tell Syracuse or the offer was contingent on some of his academics that he hasn’t yet fulfilled.

  13. bruce says:

kid seems to be a player. could be a very dangerous runner here at syracuse. i like this pick up.

  14. Ron says:

After I made my previous post,I go to another web page onlt to find that the kid hasn’t committed to Syracuse and is undecided as to where he would like to play football.

Has someone played a hoax on us? Do you think a booster from one of those other schools have offered someone some money? Should we think that his father is pulling a Cam Newtom and shopping around for the highest bidder for his services? Should we believe that his grades are not up to par for admission to college?

Leaves a lot of unanswered questions that people need to start asking.

  15. D.A. says:

We’re posting about Davis’ situation right now. Will be up shortly. Strange.

  16. Russell MacEachern says:

I don’t trust some of them southern football factories…esp the SEC!!!
