Elite New Jersey PG Tyler Ennis Puts Syracuse, Louisville & Illinois in Top 3

MSG Varsity

Jim Boeheim and his staff over recent months have expressed major interest in Class of 2013 PG Tyler Ennis, and the Orange has made the final cut. The St. Benedict Prep star has considered SU for quite some time, but the Orange are now in his top 3 with Illinois and Louisville.

The 6’2 175 lb. Ennis has showcased himself as a five-star talent and should make an immediate impact wherever he decides to attend school. The NCAA changed its rules in April to allow coaches to talk to recruits earlier, and the value of the Brampton, Ontario native has only risen. He can score in bunches with his consistent mid-range jumper, and his ability to get to the basket is polished. His high basketball IQ separates him even more, which makes Ennis a consensus top-five PG in the nation.

Ennis just participated in The LeBron James Skills Academy this past weekend, and landing a spot there proves how highly he’s regarded. An environment mixed with both collegiate and high school players, this Nike skills camp attracts 93 of the best HS players from around the country. Ennis has a swarm of offers coming his way, including Kansas, Villanova, and Georgetown. From the camp emerged his top 3 destinations. The Fizz breaks down each program and how he fits the schools.

  • Syracuse

Getting Ennis would be another big get for SU. Many don’t see him as a one-and-done type player, so his value comes with staying on campus for awhile before he looks at the NBA. Ennis has said that playing time right away is a factor, but the Orange do have Michael Carter-Williams at that spot.

Ennis would also be closer to home than the other finalists, since he attends high school in New Jersey and his family lives in Buffalo. After enjoying his visit to SU and Midnight Madness, he has repeatedly mentioned the idea of playing under Jim Boeheim and the SU bond.

“It’s close to home. I like how they have a family atmosphere. Even when you graduate, you’re still a part of the Syracuse family.”

By the time Ennis is on campus, Syracuse will also be playing in the ACC. It does’t get much bigger than when you’re battling North Carolina or Duke.

  • Illinois

With the Fighting Illini, playing time should be made available to him. A multitude of guards are returning to next year’s team, but many are upperclassmen. Illinois has already landed two recruits for the 2013 class in Malcolm Hill and Maverick Morgan.

Head Coach John Groce was just hired and will be entering his first season next year. He would love to add a program cornerstone in Ennis to get off to a good start. Ennis told SB Nation Chicago back in May that Illinois is not the front-rummer but has been in contact.

“They’re not favorites, but they’re who keeps in touch the most. Who I’m in touch with the most right now.”

The Big Ten is not quite the ACC in prestige, but last year the conference was one of the best in the nation. Groce is on board to help revamp their program, and Ennis could easily get the role of star in that scenario.

  • Louisville

The Cards only have one returning underclassmen guard in Kevin Ware and stand-out Kyle Kuric is on his way out. But Rick Pitino may be looking towards another top 5 PG in Virginia native Anthony Barber, who has received offers from Alabama and Kansas as well according to Scout. He is ranked as the 3rd best point in the nation, right in front of Ennis.

Ennis told the Carrier-Journal that he has plenty of respect for Slick Rick:

“Louisville has a Hall of Fame coach in Rick Pitino and he’s always keeping in touch with me. He’s been to see me and I like how they play. I like Louisville’s style and the way they are able to develop point guards.”

Ennis certainly has plenty of other offers he may consider, but it comes down to this from these three schools: a leader of a rebuilding program in Illinois, joining Pitino’s parade of dynamic guards, or a formidable starter on Boeheim’s national contender. We will see as a decision may be coming soon.

  1. Cuse don't luse says:

Sounds like Illinois has no chance and Louisville is waiting on another pg so it looks like there is a high chance he becomes an orangeman

  2. Carlton says:

I know about tyler ennis. Ppl i’d like u to look into are: wayne sheldon, chris walker, wiggins, the kid from nj. We seem to be in mix for alot of ppl but not the fav. In an of the races. Not good. Also wiggins put us in his top 5 but all I hear is fsu an uk.

  3. CoachDuff says:

Wayne Selden is a lost cause most likely he is taking the same path as Noel, reclassifying then going to Kentucky. Chris Walker is waiting on an offer from Kentucky before he sits down to make a decision, so that tells you which way he might be leaning. Andrew Wiggins is class of 2014 so i am sure the Fizz will be covering Wiggins as well as other top recruits Noah Vonleh (UNC & SU are his “dream schools”)and Dakari Johnson all of next year. I believe the NJ kid you speak of is Jermaine Lawrence, SU is in his top three along with Rutgers and Florida. But yeah an update or any new news with him would be pleasing. Personally i think the Cuse would have a great 2013 class if they could land Ennis & Lawrence as well as one of the Maryland talents Wainright or Anya just to keep the Md pipeline flowing steadily to SU.

Dear Fizzies. With footbal practice coming quickly I would spend some time projecting Doug’s next verbal.Whether its OE or some other store brand name you should concentrate on that Let the basketball recruiting take care of itself in its usual glacial speed.

  5. Russell MacEachern says:

What no football?I’m w/u Chris…I guess they have to mix it up to please hoop fan’s…maybe tomorrow..The Fizz is sizzling…!!

  6. FreeAgentID says:

    Come to the Orange Tyler!

  7. Carlton says:

Yea it was lawrence. Wiggins might reclass to 13. Listed ‘cuse as one of the top 5 schools but only info I can get on him is UK or FSU are his likely landin spots. Just wonderin if we are even really in the mix.

  8. Glash says:

Thanks for the read as always guys. We try to keep both football and basketball relevant,so we’ll be alternating between the two until the next big commit for SU football is in. As for Wiggins, yes I have heard the same: SU is in his Top 5. We can get a post on him and Jermaine Lawrence in the coming weeks.

  9. kevin says:

Has been more then a few months, more like a couple of years. I think they land him, the 2 Isiahs, and Dakari Johnson for sure and it looks pretty good for Beejay Anya . With the younger players they have on the current roster that makes SU one of the top teams in the nation for the next few years assuming no one leaves and goes pro early. If the also land a wiggins, vonleh, or chris walker then were really talking. I do think SU will lose a lot to the NBA in the future though, Coleman says he expects to go pro after 1 or 2 years (he is going to be way better then SU fans think, picture a stroger more athletic version of sullinger, kid looks like hes gotten into really great shape, but most SU fans think hes going to be a bust, but before SU got him they thought he was going to be a dominant one and done player who would goto uk and never pick SU), MCW, Christmas, and Fair will end up going pro early, Grant possibly too.

  10. kevin says:

Carlton- Why do you want to know about wayne seldon? he has no interest in SU and has been labelled a head case. The only thing people have said about Wiggins and FSU/uk is that those 2 have called his HS coach the most, some people take that as them being favorites, but I take that with a grain of salt.

  11. kevin says:

Also if ennis comes to SU might get them in closer with wiggins

  12. Cuse Don't Luse says:

Im fine with a basketball post but is 1 away for football and basketball possible?

  13. bigdip says:

OKevin dont blog 3 str8 times….its clld “BLOG LOG”! U start to seem weird/obsessive..Lofl! Crazy: like the statement “most cuse fans think…..he’ll be a bust” …pure lie! Its your dumb truth! Dejuan Coleman…has been a VHT – very highly touted (phil steele term) bb player since 2010, top5 rising junior, and top25 as a senior….did u take a pole about DC 2.0 on MARSHALL STREET or pulling “UR” facts out ur BUNGHOLE buddy? DC 2.0 is wat ALL SU fans agree is the Anti MELO: JD education, strong rebounder, real post scorer…. not a bust dude! A student athlete

Watched Ennis this year…. reminded me of a Corey Joseph, canadian..former longhorn freshman, nba 1st rounder. Poised, IQ, controlled game flow….would be a good get! MCW at SG…Ennis at PG…Theyre 6’5″ & 6’2″….obviously MCW would be off-ball for scoring. SU Brand is on fire again….Dion Fab Kjo(10+ avg sum leag)…Chandler to N.E….Zach elite11…CJ at Lebo camp…CMELO the olympian! Kids know Syracuse will increase exposure…its a great time to go Orange!

As far as 2013 talent goes… stay away from any potential Kentucky Wildcats…its just really early right now to gage the sport. We took a transfer, so thats one less scholarship… some of these guys are just IRRELEVANT to wat SUs future plans are… 1+1= 2 .. at most we get Ennis and another recruit..the spots aren’t there? Mookie’s goes to MG Southerland’s goes to Ennis, Triche’s goes to ? There’s only one spot from my count….

  14. chris says:

We got it Ennis likes three team and one of them is Syracuse. Get another informative article up ther on page one. Its almost as pathetic as one of the rival sites that require money. It is’t that difficult.

  15. Carlton says:

Kevin- thats not true. Wiggns AAU coach has stated that he only saw 2 teams that stood out. One bein fsu an the other bein uk. He also said that cal was the 1st to see him play. Also both rents went to fsu for school. So /w that said it brings me back to my last question is the ‘cuse really a factor?

DC was never thought to be a “bust”. Heck how can u even think that /w the kid not even setting foot on campus yet? The only place I think that could have came from is syracuse.com an the crazy ppl that blog at that site.

  16. CoachDuff says:

@BigDip The spots are there. The Cuse will have 5 scholarships to offer 2013 recruits. NCAA Mens basketball teams get 13 scholarships, SU will only have 8 players on scholarship (MCW, Cooney, Fair, Keita, Christmas, Coleman, Grant and Gbinije).

  17. For my money the only person in this competition with the real X factor is Joshua Ledet, this guy is something else the gift from god that we all waited for.
