Optimist vs. Pessimist: Syracuse’s Non-Con Slate is Toughest in Nation

Sporting News has confirmed what we already knew about Syracuse’s football non-conference schedule: it’s brutal. But SN even took things a step further, saying SU’s non-conference slate is the toughest in the nation.
That should be both impressive and disturbing for Orange fans. We all knew the schedule was tough, but to see it beat out the other top BCS schedules for this dubious distinction is eye opening.
Is the treacherous schedule something to get excited about or something to fear? The Fizz breaks down the positives and negatives of the Orange’s ridiculously rigorous non-conference foray.
Reasons for Optimism
- Non-Conference schedule will stir up excitement
Who gives a crap if you beat Akron or Tulane? No one. Beyond the obligatory FCS contest against Stony Brook, the Orange will exclusively play games against opponents from BCS conferences. Teams it will receive praise for beating, but not shame for losing to or playing a close game against. These are exciting opponents in good environments that will be sure to pique the interest of fans, providing the Orange stays afloat (emphasis on the previous five words). USC at MetLife, Missouri in Columbia, a chance for revenge against Minnesota on the road, and a home clash against Northwestern. The last time Syracuse squared off against the Golden Gophers and the Wildcats in 2009, both games had crazy, down to the wire finishes.
- Positive impact on recruiting
Excitement surrounding a program usually goes hand in hand with recruiting, as should be the case here. As long as the Orange doesn’t embarrass itself, playing on a big stage will be an advantage for Doug Marrone’s recruiting efforts. New York City players present and future are pumped about the opportunity to play at MetLife Stadium. And if Syracuse exceeds expectations during non-conference play, it will surely raise its national profile.
- Some of the games are still very winnable
It’ll be tough, but surviving the non-conference schedule is doable for the Orange. You can probably go ahead and mark down USC and Mizzou as losses already, but Minnesota has had one winning season in the last six years, including back-to-back 3-9 records the last two seasons. If Stony Brook isn’t an automatic victory, then we’ll just move on to basketball season right then and there. Northwestern is the toss-up game on the schedule. With wins against Minnesota and Stony Brook, SU will have to go 4-3 in the Big East to qualify for a bowl game. With an additional win against Northwestern, SU will only have to go 3-4 to be bowl eligible. Either way, it’s certainly possible for Syracuse to perform .500 or better in the Big East.
Reasons for Pessimism
- There is no safety net
The Orange’s schedule is similar to driving 65 mph around the dangerous bend in the photograph above. It might survive and have a badass story to tell its friends, but it also could crash and burn. Syracuse will play several winnable non-conference games, but with the exception of Stony Brook, all of SU’s opponents could easily get the better of the Orange. Despite an awful end to last year, Marrone isn’t on the hot seat yet (especially with a commitment from Ebenezer Ogundeko). But find me a coach whose team goes 2-10 or 3-9 who isn’t at least in the vicinity of the axe. Non-conference schedules are usually intended to prevent disaster. But Syracuse’s slate enables a possible disastrous season.
- This is a pointless exercise
Jim Boeheim and many other college basketball coaches pad their early season schedules with mid-majors because they feel their conference schedules are tough enough to earn the respect of the NCAA Selection Committee. But some teams put a few difficult non-conference foes on their schedules in order to boost their tournament resume. Such a tactic serves no purpose for Marrone. If Syracuse football was competing for a National Championship in the weak Big East, it would stand to benefit by playing USC and Missouri. The Trojans and Tigers could make the difference in the computer rankings. However, there is virtually no chance SU will compete for a National Title. The best the Orange can do is ensure that it makes a bowl game. The top way to do that is to play cupcakes in September.
Partially because of its own doing and partially because West Virginia bolted from the Big East, Syracuse must grind through a grueling non-conference schedule in order to return to a bowl game.

For years the fans have said, the reason for the locals not to support the team was that Syracuse doesn’t play anyone out of schedule worth their weight in salt.
So now the university gives the fans good teams to play and now the critizing begins.
Syracuse will lose to USC and I believe they will beat Missouri,Northwestern, Minnesota and Stony Brook.
Syracuse is giving the fans exactly what they’ve asked for and let’s see if the fans react by coming to the dome to watch them play.
If they should lose to three of the four above teams,I can hear the complaints now.
The chant to get rid of Marrone will get louder as season get’s by.
People need to realize when that when the university got rid of Coach P and hired Coach Robinson is when all of the problems started for Syracuse. We lost some good recruits because we got rid of the coach.
So ask yourselv’es before you start complaing. Do we need to go through another decade of upheaval.
We have some damn good recruits coming in already do we want to take the chance of losing what we already have committed?
Please people,we need to be patient.
It’s going to be interesting both on and off the field for the team this year.
I know that once the season starts, the people who hate Syracuse University and Coach Marrone is going to let their thoughts be known to us all.
GO CUSE
If the Cuse go 4 out 5 in the nonconference schedule they will easily be in the top 25. That would be spectacular!
Nobody thought we would beat West Virginia last year, let alone destroy them. I’m willing to let this team prove itself on the field. They didn’t look altogether terrible against USC last year either, despite the final score.
Marrone has some new offensive weapons to play with and Nassib is in his final year and needs to make a statement to find his way into the NFL. I think this team might surprise us this year.
This shows more than anything that nobody in college football has anything to gain from a tough non-conference schedule. It’s all about getting wins and making it to a bowl, which is far more easily accomplished with a winable OOC schedule. USC is a great draw for fans, but the rest of SUs OCC schedule features all average or below average (Stony) teams. And yet, they’re still #1? It says something decent about SU, but it’s really more of a slam against the overwhelming majority of programs, who are out collecting wins like Mario collects magic coins on the way to find their princess.
I agree completely with Derek. I have that feeling about this team. I may look like an idiot by the end of the season but that won’t be unfamiliar territory for me. Hahaha!
Good points from everyone. It just shows how high the stakes are this year. The non-con schedule is capable of placing SU in the top 25, but it could also completely destroy its bowl hopes.
If we beat mizzou or USC we could push for the top 25
Hey Ron..wow ur getting my hopes up but I think its all doable!Realistically I see us beating Minny,SB,possibly NW…Mizzou Im a little skeptical on the road but think w/Nassib and a little luck anything can happen and USC is a loss….in the BE only Pitt,RU and Louisville are the wildcards to a potential eyeopening season…Uconn and RU are always wars…I can see a great 7-5 season w/the help of a break here and there and at least another bowl trip!!Nassib is vastly underrated…
I feel that Syracuse Football is at a critical turning point again and I remain very optimistic that they will come out the other side victorous.
I can remember a little about Coach Schwartzwalder and the 1959 National Championship. Before his retirement in 1973 there was the “Syracuse8″ or better known as the “Black Boycott”. Ben was replaced in 1974 by Frank Maloney who was an Assistant Coach at Michigan and was finally replaced in 1980 by Dick MacPherson and Paul Pasquiloni that lasted until 2004. As we all know Coach P was replaced by Coach Robinson and was replaced in 2008 by Coach Marrone.
I’ve been in the stands as Syracuse beat the likes of #1 Nebraska home in the dome,Va.Tech with no time remainging on the clock as Donavon McNabb threw back across the field to his tightend, a Ron Dane led Wisconsin team in Giants Stadium,I’ve watched them destroy West Virginia both home and away, even with guy’s like Beno Cook telling me that Syracuse didn’t belong on the field with them, witnessed them beat Florida and watched Syracuse destroy Clemson in the 1995 Gator Bowl. I watched Syracuse play the mighty Warren Sapp led Miami Hurricanes evenly and came up 3 yards short of winning the game.
Those are only a few of the reasons that I remain optimistic. I can see good things happening again with this team. Under coach Marrones leadership the ship is correcting it’s course. When it happens people ought to watch out. Syracuse will again be a tough draw. ACC here we come.
I apologize to all for such a long post,I for one believe in this team.
GO CUSE
I think the NW is absolutely huge. To come out of the gate and get a that win at home would be a nice confidence boost. If the Orange lose that, we’re looking at two straight losses to open the season with USC in week two.
Syracuse so far has four national broadcasts on the schedule. Two of those being Friday night home games with no competetion from other CFB games. These are the games Cuse needs to show up in get some national attention and recruits interested. The WVU game last year being a perfect example. Dome was rocking!
One follow up point regarding Cuse having the toughest OOC schedule in the nation… Syracuse only played one top 25 team in conference last season (WVU). The strength of schedule from a BE slate is not great. I think we should welcome some tough OOC games and then expect to do well in conference play. But if we’re still at a stage where were hoping to just get bowl eligible, then wins are all that matter – not who they’re against.
Anyways, hoping for good things this year!
1959 ain’t ever com’in again – get OVER IT. SU vs Stony Brook is a game. SU vs USC is Doc Gross dreaming…the Hindenberg of the upcoming fall season…
@Poughkeepsie Popper;I’m happy to read that someone has the ability to look into the the future and then come on here and tell us all about it.
Just to let you know so that you get the facts correct,I referenced the 1959 championship as to when I started following the Syracuse Football program.
I was just trying to relate to all the ups and downs of the program since then. The one thing that has never changed overtime is people like you never seem to go away.
HOW SAD.
GO CUSE;
Hey Mike, don’t underestimate the in conference strength of schedule…yes there are no top 10 team’s…but EVERY team is solid!!!Minn,NW,SB none of these team’s would finish in the top 7 of the BE..as a conferance top to bottom we were higher rated than the ACC last year…quit listening to ESPin…!!!those pundits are mad about the BE talking to NBC!!!@Ron did anyone have trouble getting on the Fizz this weekend?it kept saying offline?
@Cuse Dont Lose…we don’t HAVE to beat Mizzou or USC but we should be respectable and beat the NW nobodys and Minnasorrys along w/SB and a good 4-3 BE showing and 7 wins is maybe achieveable!!!with a bowl win 8-5 will shock the naysayers…go Orange…
The Orange will go 10 – 2 this year. You can bank on it! GO CUSE!!!!
