As we move towards National Signing Day, Syracuse will be hosting plenty of recruits who wind down their recruiting process with a visit to the Hill next weekend. A more recent name the Orange is trying to go after is Antwan Cordy.

Some of Cordy’s numbers do not pop. The Sunshine State product is only 5’9” and 175 lbs. Bulking up for the ACC will be important for Cordy’s early development. He does, however, run a 4.45 40-time, a major positive for a team desperate for playmakers. His build and style of play closely resemble another Florida player, Brisly Estime, who has used his speed to succeed on the field.

Cordy has a 35-inch vertical and can get up to break up pass attempts. His smaller figure does not seem to bother him as he is a good on his feet and is a decent tackler. These are the skills that can determine early playing time. Cordy is another example of Coach McDonald’s attempts to establish a recruiting ground of Florida. Although only three out of the 17 commits are from Florida, more could be on the way, as uncommitted players such as Steve Ishmael, Adly Enoicy and others still have the Orange high on their lists.

Syracuse is not the only school pursuing Cordy. Duke, Kentucky and Tennessee are all on his final list. Cordy is listed on Rivals as a word we mentioned last week: Athlete.  Cordy has switched off between receiver and defensive back in his final season at South Dade. The 2-star player will be visiting with at least six other recruits including, Mikale Wilbon, Jamal Custis, Rodney Williams, Lamar Down, Trumaine Washington and Jonathan Thomas.

While a commitment from Cordy would add to a solid recruiting class, the Orange already have three cornerback commits in this class and still need help on the line of scrimmage. So far, Chris Slayton and Aaron Roberts make up the lineman core in the 2014 class. Zeek Rodney would be a great addition to help out the defensive line. Denzel Ward is the player to look out for to help the other side of the ball. Scout also lists that Kayton Samuels, a 2-star recruit, might be visiting next weekend.

Scott Shafer has succeeded in identifying areas where the Orange needs long-term improvement and recruiting players to help there. This is a crucial time for Shafer and his coaching staff to add in the final pieces in a solid class for a second-year head coach.
