We talked yesterday about how Koby Quansah is one of two recruits given offers this past weekend at Syracuse camp. Darnell Savage from Bear, Delaware received the other.

Does that town seem familiar? It should—Jerome Smith hails from the same town. And while he is no longer Orange, Smith’s success at Syracuse could intrigue Savage to give the team a hard look.

Savage is a 3-star athlete who plays both wide receiver and cornerback. Syracuse is a team that¬†loves versatile players¬†that can help fill needs throughout the season. Ashton Broyld embraced the role of an “athlete” and has been getting progressively better as a wide receiver after being considered in the 2012 season for the quarterback role.

With the move to the ACC has been the expectation of talent that can compete with the majority of the conference and at least stay close in games against powerhouses like Clemson and Florida State. Speed is one of the biggest factors in this equation. Savage runs a 4.43 40-yard dash, which does not hurt against some of the best receivers and cornerbacks in the country.

If Savage wants to compete regardless of which school he decides to attend, he will have to bulk up his smaller figure. At 5’10” and 175 pounds, Savage will have to either hit the weight room or rely on his speed to succeed at the next level.

Syracuse is the underdog to land Savage, according to NJ.com. He plans to visit Maryland next week and make a decision soon after. Rutgers and Maryland are clearly the frontrunners, but he said Syracuse has an “outside chance.” He also has offers from Virginia and Temple with the hopes of attending Penn State camp later this summer.

Savage is a name to remember down the road if he decides to take his talents elsewhere.Decommitments are highly prevalent in college football and could continue until an early signing period is put into place. A rough season for Rutgers or Maryland, both new members of the Big Ten, could put SU in a spot to swoop in on a versatile player.

Although the Orange’s preliminary chances might not too promising, keeping Savage’s eyes on Syracuse could prove big down the road. The Orange currently has 11 commits and hopes to keep adding.
