The Spurs Just Do It Better — Wemby’s Proof 💣🏀

0:00
The NBA's
0:02
most luck
0:04
soaked team, the San Antonio Spurs,
0:08
are back in the NBA Finals
0:11
and may have accidentally created
0:14
the most perfect basketball future.
0:17
I know if you root for a million teams
0:20
and you see them come up with the
0:21
winning lottery balls for both Tim
0:23
Duncan and
0:27
Victor Wembanyama, before that David
0:29
Robinson,
0:32
finding Kawhi Leonard, you might think,
0:35
"Oh my god, how lucky can they get?" But
0:37
the fact is, if Victor Wembanyama was
0:40
not drafted by the San Antonio Spurs, we
0:43
would not have this to marvel at.
0:47
Of course, he would be great in his own
0:49
regard, but he would be trapped on an
0:51
organization for a team potentially that
0:53
was going nowhere fast like so many
0:56
other number one picks of the past. And
0:59
think about how quickly he is now
1:02
ascended to the NBA Finals thrown just
1:05
22 years old. And look at what the Spurs
1:09
surrounded him with.
1:12
Good young play making talent,
1:16
depth at a million different positions,
1:19
a strong culture,
1:22
a strong knowing of who they are and
1:25
what they do, the internal institutional
1:29
knowledge to build around a winner,
1:32
and they've done it just so well.
1:36
They don't have Popovich on the sideline
1:38
anymore, but nobody looks at the Spurs
1:39
and goes, "Oh my god, they've got a bozo
1:41
as a head coach."
1:43
They don't have Victor Wembanyama Victor
1:45
Wembanyama carrying everything.
1:49
They've got guys that can also
1:50
contribute. Look at this young
1:52
backcourt.
1:53
They didn't only have lottery picks
1:55
around him. They brought in De'Aaron
1:57
Fox.
1:59
So, they've got a lot of everything.
2:02
And when Wemby's great, obviously
2:05
they're great.
2:06
But, he didn't have to go Magic Johnson
2:09
1980 NBA Finals 40-20-10
2:14
for them to win a game seven on the road
2:17
against the defending champs with the
2:20
reigning two-time MVP.
2:23
Wemby could be great, but others could
2:25
be great around him.
2:27
And how significant is it
2:29
that guys like Stephon Castle,
2:32
De'Aaron Fox,
2:35
they've got guys across this across this
2:39
roster
2:40
that are stepping up to have big games,
2:43
big moments, big plays alongside
2:48
Wemby.
2:49
Look at the contributions that they got
2:51
last night. So many different ways in a
2:55
game seven on the road that obviously is
2:57
a remarkable tough place to play. Look
3:00
at the types of games they got from
3:03
unsung heroes in a game seven on the
3:07
road.
3:08
I mean, you're looking at a guy
3:11
that can step off the bench in Luke
3:13
Kornet and come up with the block of the
3:15
series.
3:17
You're looking at guys that don't
3:20
usually have to contribute a lot, but
3:23
can come in and do a little bit of this,
3:26
a little bit of that. Dylan Harper with
3:28
12 points off the bench, hit two big
3:32
threes, contributed seven rebounds as
3:34
well.
3:35
As I mentioned, the block from Kornet,
3:37
huge when Wemby came out.
3:40
You know, even a guy like Keldon Johnson
3:42
steps up with 11 points in this game.
3:45
So, the bench contributed.
3:47
And that's the beautiful thing about the
3:49
Spurs. This is not just a Wemby's got to
3:52
carry us. This is an organization that
3:55
knows how to build around a young
3:58
superstar and even when Gregg Popovich
4:02
has to exit stage right, he's also in
4:04
the mix of again, institutional
4:08
knowledge, wisdom, preparation.
4:11
It's a phenomenal organization and
4:13
because of it,
4:14
it allows us to enjoy Wemby
4:17
and not think about him as
4:20
a Patrick Ewing type figure having to
4:23
carry the entire franchise for years on
4:27
end until they can kind of get things
4:29
sorted out.
4:31
Him landing with the Spurs might be
4:33
annoying because they've already had
4:35
their dynastic run, but it also gives us
4:39
him in this big spot, in this great
4:42
moment in the NBA finals already with a
4:45
tremendous organization to support him.
