Is SU in Knight’s Big Three?

The Big Fish will make his decision Wednesday. And SU may be in the final three.

The date is set: The 2010 SU recruiting class will be nailed down one way or another on Wednesday at 4p, when Brandon Knight will make his decision live on ESPNU.

It’s been a long process, but not an irregular one for the highest profile recruit in the country. Josh Selby still hasn’t announced his decision, although it’s believed Kansas and UConn are up there, along with Kentucky.
So what are the chances Knight wears Orange?
He still has UConn on his list, on paper at least. The Fizz thinks that ship has sailed. Rumors out of Storrs is the Husky players grumbled most of last season about Calhoun-Bot 3000’s tyrannous tactics. Can’t see that not effecting Knight’s
recruitment and decision.
According to Adam Kuperstein from NBC-6 in Miami, he’s pretty sure that Knight is going to bounce from his homestate, eliminating those hoping for the hometown discount with the Gators.
Listen to the newest FizzCast with NBC-6’s Kuperstein on Knight’s decision here:
That leaves Kansas, Kentucky, and Syracuse as landing points for the star guard.

A lot of this could end up smelling like the Tobias Harris decision from months back.
If you followed the chain of events, Harris’ last trip to Tennessee ended up being a chess move, pushing Jayvaughn Pinkston’s decision back and taking him out of the Volunteer picture.
‘Cuse fans are in a tough spot. Selby isn’t announcing until the Jordan Brand Classic. Knight will move first. If it had been flipped around, Selby’s decision could have had an influence on Knight’s.

Say, for example, Selby landed with Kansas or Kentucky. It would have eliminated a school from Knight’s list because they play the same position, and increased the odds of Knight choosing SU.
However, Selby is announcing after Knight, and Josh doesn’t have the Orange on his radar anymore. It’s Knight or bust for the ‘Cuse.

As the Fizz told you over the weekend, he was talking about potentially taking a visit to the 315 before things are said and done. Although, squeezing in a flight to Hancock before Wednesday seems farfetched.
The good news is we now have a date the B-Knight Sweepstakes will end. The buzz seems to be changing by the day, so stay tuned to the Fizz. We’re all over this.

  1. This doesn’t smell anything like Tobias aka “The Son of Torrell” aka “The Product” Harris.

Not only is the team in need of a PF recruit, but Tobias Harris was recruited and followed by SU long before his body and skills caught up with his father’s hoop dreams. He blogged on syracuse.com, he came to SU’s camp annually, and was prolifically socializing with SU players following his visit. He was courted as well as any recruit can be, but he and his father wanted him to be a star big man on campus from day one and Bruce Pearl knew how to massage their egos.

Brandon Knight on the other hand is a clear 1-and-done PG … a position SU already has locked up twice-over for at least 2 years. He has been atop the recruiting ranks since he could walk and SU has never been leading the way nor pressing for his services. Everyone who has any sense of objectivity expects and would recommend he attend Kentucky; any other school would be a shock at this point.

Tobias Harris’ recruitment was a two-headed/two-faced disaster that started off as a rags-to-riches story that eventually edited out the rags. Knight’s however has always been quiet and humble.

  2. shmf,

I understand your angle on the Tobias recruitment, but I think you missed the context I was trying to put it in.

When Harris took the last-minute trip to Knoxville on his way back form GA Tech, something clicked with him and Bruce Pearl. Originally, Jayvaughn Pinkston was expected to sign with the Vols.

However, the next day, Pinkston mysteriously reneged and pushed his signing back. The writing on the wall said that Pearl preferred Harris over Pinkston, and gave Harris the open scholarship.

What I’m trying to get at is the domino theory that having two elite unsigned players at the same position can create. Because Selby and Knight share three schools on their lists, it only makes sense that one’s decision would affect the other.

The recruitment itself couldn’t have been more different, and we mention that in the Fizzcast this week. Thanks for reading!
