The Black Cloud of the SU Preseason

When you wake up and read the paper (online for those under the age of 50) the following subhead is never a good thing.

“Untested players will be protecting quarterback’s blind side”

In the words of a young instant messenger, “OIC.”

A first-year starting signal caller has a tag team of new guys to make sure he doesn’t get lit up? It’s just the latest in difficult ’10 camp news.

Nolan Weidner and Dave Rahme have done a terrific job covering this preseason, laying out all the news and notes from camp. Unfortunately, those news and notes haven’t been all positive.

“RB Averin Collier doesn’t report for Syracuse University football preseason camp.”

That’s bad. Obviously bad, considering the Delone Carter situation.

“Orange football’s air attack to use group effort”

What that really should read is, “SU lacks No. 1 receiver after departure of Mike Williams.” The article certainly hammered that point home.

It hasn’t just been the big news. How about little nuggets that have also sneakily bored their through?

Fizz Favorite Dom Timbers (like a handful of other ’10 commits) has to get another semester (at least) of education before coming to SU.

Or juco transfer Lou Alexander, who still hasn’t been cleared to attend Syracuse.

The Fizz appreciates a tough situation. Academic problems are something a coach can only try and correct as a collective group over time. As for the recruits coming in, he has no control of it. However, there’s no brighter way to spin it. This has been a tough camp. Thank goodness we have ChandlerBall.
