Fizz Radio: Hoffman, D.A. and ESPN’s Ryen Russillo on Fab Melo’s Suspension

Team Fizz connected Tuesday night to discuss theories behind why Fab Melo was suspended, what effect this will have on Syracuse, we redo the bracket picks, and discuss whether his next stop is the NBA. For full coverage of Melo’s ineligibility, read the Fizz’s updated post from Tuesday.
The Fizz’s coverage of Syracuse’s run in the NCAA Tournament begins Wednesday in Pittsburgh, where Craig Hoffman and Alex Plavin will report daily. Follow The Fizz as SU begins life without Fab.

The way it was reported on the local sports show in Syracuse was that the NCAA reopened it’s investagation of Fab Melo going back to the first semister of this year. If that’s true then the question is, how can they reopen an investagation of a student once they have already cleared him of any wrong doing?
I guess if your from the University of Cincinnati, you can have a brawl, split players of the other teams faces open and nothing is done about it from the University or the NCAA.
One can bribe a players father for a minimun of $180,000 and because there wasn’t a rule in place, the NCAA turns their cheeks the other way.
But boy if something smells fishy in the North East region of the US, then they feel it only right that they spend another 1 billion dollars to investagate and destroy the future of a young black man.
I wish that when the 4 super conferences finally get resolved, that they tell the NCAA Committee to go to hell and just go their own way.
Now that I’ve vetted a little here guy’s,I still think that Syracuse has a good chance to come out of the East Bracket and get to the Final Four.
Go Cuse!!!!!!
I have to disgree with you Ron, the timing is poor by the NCAA, but lets look at this in 2 ways.
1) This is Fab’s fault, plain and simple. You have tutors, academic advisor’s, school faculty and professors that are there to help student athletes. All you have to do is go to class and do the work. There are rumors that he has not been attending any of his classes!! Are you kidding me?!! You attend all your classes and your guaranteed a passing mark. There is no way he or anyone else should be failing or skipping class.
2) Say that ‘Cuse goes on to win the whole thing and down the road the NCAA finds out about this. We lose everything. Its more of an embarrassment to the team, university, city and fans that support ‘Cuse basketball and we most likely get a post season ban.
This year has been the best/worst season i have ever witnessed in my 20 years of being a fan. This is really the only thing that fans in upstate NY look forward to and its being taking away in all the worst case scenarios.
I feel awful for the other players, coaching staff and other team staff that have worked so hard to watch some idiot embarrass himself but more importantly the university and fans.
I hope ‘Cuse can prove all the nay sayer’s wrong and punch their tix to New Orleans.
Did anyone hear anything more on the cryptic CBS quote that the problem was “Fab didn’t do some of the work”? This seemed like it could mean one of two things – 1) Fab wasn’t doing the work/attending classes or 2) that we have an academic fraud (a la Clem Haskins at Minnesota back in the day) case going where the tutors are doing the work for him.
I cannot fathom how the rumor of him skipping classes for months could be true. The grad assistants, managers etc usually do bed checks for the top players to make sure they are attending so something like this doesn’t happen. How the hell could they have been so careless?
The bottom line is we have a hat trick’s worth of scandals this year and it underlines the fact there are some serious systemic issues. At best JB is incredibly ignorant. His Sgt Schulze routine is getting pretty old though.
This is one of the worst thingsI have seen……..This never ever happens at a big time program. It is always up to the student…..but how could syracuse let him become ineligible….for grades…..Most schools have the players take a light load/minimum requirements during the season. they have tutors…..what about..no practice…and study hall?……This is unprecedented…some one give me a similar scenario!!!
Boeheim is a hands off kind of guy and the fact is Fab didn’t go to class, checked out. He wanted to fool around with girls and eat during the times he had class. Go to the SU cafeteria and ask the lunch ladies if they’ve told him to go to class, I bet you’d be surprised at what they’d tell you they say from Fab.
Yeah, I saw that. This DEFINITELY connects back to his earlier suspension, no matter what Seth Davis says. Fab was out to lunch on classes (not that that’s rare for student athlete) and SU freaked out recently and feared this run being vacated.
D.A. I think you are right, but I really think this dates back to last summer. SU keeps its athletes on campus to play ball, work out, and take a full load during summer school to fatten up their GPAs as most guys’ grades drop during the season. It’s natural with all the midweek games. Well, Fab played for Brazil last summer meaning no summer school, and thus little cushion for him GPA wise. He didn’t do his work in the fall, and my understanding is that this had nothing to do with a test being invalidated. Rather, he’s being accused of plagiarism, and SU is definitely playing it safe. Let’s hope Rakeem can duplicate his play against UConn in the NCAAs. I’m hoping SU has learned a lesson here and backs away from Nerlens Noel. He seems like multiple NCAA violations waiting to happen. I find it interesting that right after stories start breaking about his recruitment, and ties to him and CAA, the agency that manages Calipari, Calipari is rumored to be headed back to the NBA to coach the Wizards. That tells me the NCAA is sniffing around Lexington too, and the poop that stinks to high heaven about Anthony Davis’ recruitment is going to lead to Cal’s exit from UK. Hopefully UK gets eliminated from the NCAAs because if they win it, the banner will be vacated within 5 years. If SU cuts down the nets, it will be one of the greatest coaching jobs ever, period.
Great coverage by the Fizz on the Fab saga. It’d be nice if one of the staffers for the Fizz that’s still on the SU Hill could get the real scoop so we don’t play another twenty rounds of #FabMeloRumors. I’m not going to hold my breath waiting for syracuse.com to come up with the real story.
