Robert Washington was saying all of the right things after his commitment to the Orange on Saturday, saying that he wants to bring this program back into the national spotlight. He likened the situation here to that of the University of Miami in the 80s. A couple of recruits took a program that was struggling and made it a national powerhouse.
Reports are already emerging that Washington has several, as many as seven, recruits that he hopes he can bring to Syracuse. It’s easy for Orange fans to get very excited about this prospect. There hasn’t been much to smile about with Syracuse football the last year and the commitment of Washington and his declaration that he will change this program is one of the best things to happen to Syracuse football in a while.
However, this must all be taken with a grain of salt. We were all witnesses to Washington’s indecision. Until he puts pen to paper on National Signing Day Orange fans should be little more than cautiously optimistic that he is coming to Syracuse.
Then, even if he does come, if will still be hard for him to bring in top-tier talent. There are very few people who will turn down offers from the likes of Alabama, Florida and TCU to come to Syracuse like he did.
However, one could argue that this works both ways. If Washington is able to land another top recruit, then it is more likely that he will stick with his verbal commitment and come to Syracuse.
Either way, its hard to blame Orange fans if they are feeling a little giddy this weekend. This was one of the biggest days Syracuse football has had in a long time.
This commitment could just be the beginning of a big turnaround for the program. Whether or not it is depends of how strongly committed Washington is to Syracuse.
