Scott Shafer tweeted “It’s a great day to be ORANGE.” Bobby Acosta tweeted “Boooooooooom. Boooooooooom” and then there was Joanie Mahoney, who tweeted “Congrats to Coach Shafer and SU football.”
That’s what receiving a verbal commitment from a highly touted 4-star running back can do. When Robert Washington looked set for Florida on Saturday there were a lot of heartbroken Orange fans. Then it came out that Washington actually changed his mind (which can’t make anyone feel good about the future) and decided to commit to Syracuse.
Following the commitment Rivals reported that Washington had already contacted four other players in the 2016 class. This could lead to even more highly touted recruits choosing SU. Does it get any better than that?
In other recruiting news Syracuse safety signee Marquise Blair won the MVP in the Ohio North-South Classic on Saturday. Blair finished the all-star game with four interceptions.
Blair is the 24th ranked safety in the nation in the 2015 class. If he resolves his academic issues then he will almost surely see time in SU’s defensive backfield this upcoming season. The only other scholarship safeties on the roster are sophomore Rodney Williams and junior Chauncey Scissum. It is not listed on the roster, but sophomore Antwan Cordy has also played safety for Syracuse this spring.
Finally, don’t forget about Anthony Brown Orange fans. The highly rated 3-star New Jersey quarterback released his top five schools last week and SU was one of them. Brown is good friends with SU commit Sadiq Palmer and has already visited the Hill. All of the buzz around the program should certainly help SU’s case to land Brown as well.
