Syracuse Basketball Really Needs A Point Guard in Class of 2016

It’s no secret, the Orange has a need at guard for the Class of 2016. Jim Boeheim and staff have already struck out on Tyus Battle, and there has been an exodus in recent years of guards specifically from the program—with four different point guards starting the last four years.

With the lack of development seen from Kaleb Joseph and—more importantly—the lack of a true point guard coming in as a part of the 2015 recruiting class, the Orange needs to chase after another point guard. Maybe that point guard is Alterique Gilbert, maybe it is Kobi Simmons. Either way, the Orange needs someone.

There has been a lot of focus and attention, rightfully, on the front court players that the Orange. But SU could use the backcourt help.

No matter who it is, the Orange needs to be smart about its next addition to the Class of 2016. Because of the NCAA sanctions, the Orange has just one scholarship left to offer. This is where the loss of scholarships really comes into play. Syracuse cannot afford to get this pick—or any for the next few years—wrong. No development projects, no players who won’t be ready right away, just guys who can come in and make an impact.

In this case, the Orange needs that impact player to be a guard.
