Every football recruiting cycle Syracuse is linked with at least one big time high school player. Guys like KJ Williams, Robert Washington and Chris Clark fall into this category.
Fans dream of these recruits filling up the Dome and leading the Orange back to glory. That vision never becomes reality however, because those players don’t end up coming to Syracuse. Some choose other schools, some don’t have the grades and some have their offers rescinded.
The current “sexy” name being associated with Syracuse is California 4-star quarterback Devon Modster. The QB decommitted from Arizona last week and SU’s new staff swooped in and offered Modster a scholarship.
He confirmed this on Twitter saying, “Just been offered by Syracuse University.”
Here’s how these scenarios usually play out. The big name recruit tweets that he has been offered by SU (like we’ve seen with Modster). Then fans tweet at him and Photoshop him outside the Dome or in an SU jersey.
After that, the big name recruit arranges for a visit if there’s actually some mutual interest. The date to visit campus rolls around and another tweet comes with a picture of the recruit in an SU jersey saying the coach’s recruiting slogan. Under Scott Shafer it was #OrangeRevolution. Under Dino Babers’ two hashtags that have surfaced are #DomeDudes and #BeTheAlpha.
As National Signing Day gets closer and closer Syracuse fans become more and more hopeful that they’re about to land their guy. Then, for whatever reason a complication surfaces and “Syracuse’s savior” is playing for another team.
SU fans have done this dance many times. The rule of thumb is to not truly rely on a recruit’s allegiance or eligibility until they are actually on the field in a Syracuse uniform.
The idea of Modster playing for Syracuse is farfetched.
