Syracuse basketball still hasn’t figured themselves out yet, so it was a tall task to ask the Orange to figure out a new court as well against UConn at MSG.
One potential issue for SU on Monday night? The court is an NBA court with NBA regulation lines. Yes, college regulation lines were added for use during the game, but having the extra lines may have been confusing.
Multiple times against the Huskies we saw players take three-point shots from much farther than usual. Just how far away were those shots taken from? Right outside the NBA three-point arc.
We’ve already mentioned that Syracuse is relying heavily on their three-point percentage as they have struggled scoring in the paint. We have also already mentioned about the importance of working closer to the basket to set up and make closer shots.
So taking shots from farther than usual only contributed to Syracuse’s worst field goal percentage in a game in program history (.259).
Orange players thinking they were in a different spot on the court may have also led to different decision making. We saw SU players taking long shots when they could have passed to set up a play instead. Syracuse turned the ball over quicker as a result.
The Orange are home again to take on Boston University. Syracuse hasn’t dropped a game in the Carrier Dome yet this season. For Syracuse fans, hopefully SU has taken the days off to improve in their recent areas of weakness, because this time they won’t have the court to blame.
