Ever since leaving his job as Head Coach of the Syracuse Men’s Basketball team, Jim Boeheim has been all over the place. Whether that was at Bills training camp, or NBA Summer League watching his kids, or traveling to Europe. The legendary coach has made the most of retirement so far.
Yesterday, the university announced that “Jim Boeheim Day” will be taking place on February 24th. Director of Athletics John Wildhack said about this event, “His remarkable career and commitment to Syracuse University and our community will never be replicated. February 24th will provide our fans the opportunity to celebrate and thank Coach Boeheim.”
Last April, in an interview with the Field of 68 podcast, Boeheim said that he won’t attend any games this season. It isn’t yet clear if he will or won’t be at the game on February 24th.
The court at the JMA Wireless dome is already named after Coach Boeheim and he is in the ring of honor, so there isn’t much more that you can do for Boeheim. He deserves everything possible, considering he has the second most wins in NCAA history, made it to the final four five times and won a national title.
But now, Boeheim may be partially coming out of retirement to pursue a different career in another path of work. Jon Rothstein announced today that Boeheim will join ESPN as a basketball analyst. The 78-year-old will work both games and in studio, and will also work March Madness games for Westwood One.
Considering the many run-ins that Boeheim has had with the media in the past, it is interesting to see that this is the path he is taking. If anything though, these run-ins have shown that Boeheim can be entertaining which is what you want from the media.
