There is a ton of excitement around the Syracuse football program right now and it’s understandable why. The Orange now have three of the top recruiters in the country with Fran Brown, Elijah Robinson and Nick Williams. However, these coaches will need patience from the fan base. Recruiting, especially from the high school level is a long game. Brown said during his introductory press conference that unless he is a guaranteed NFL player, they’ll stay away from one-and-done players in the portal.
There are a ton of questions about the current roster for Syracuse. The biggest is who will be the starting quarterback next year. A few months ago, Carlos Del Rio Wilson would have been penciled in to that role next year, but after how he played against Boston College he most likely won’t be the starter. The Orange need to get their QB1 from the portal, even if it is a one year rental for 2024.
Quarterback isn’t the only position of concern for the ‘Cuse. The offensive line will need a lot of work this offseason. SU needs reinforcements at wide receiver, on the defensive line, and in the secondary. There are a ton of holes in the depth chart. If Fran Browns focus is on high school recruiting and developing players, then it will take a lot of time for the Orange to get to where they want to be.
College football, especially now with the transfer portal and COVID years, is an old sport. These true freshmen that Brown brings in, in the 2024 class will be very talented. But it will take time until the talent leads to results. Just look at Colorado with Deion Sanders this year. An incredible recruiting staff that had a lot of excitement but not much experience. There were a few really talented players on that team but the depth held them back. The Orange are in a better spot than the Buffalos were last offseason. But that comparison still reigns true and patience will be necessary with Fran Brown.
