Kyle McCord Or Nothing: Syracuse’s QB Conundrum

With all of the Syracuse football hype surrounding first-year head coach Fran Brown, and Ohio State transfer quarterback Kyle McCord, what about the others?

Yes, there’s been a ton of transfers in multiple positions and areas, and this team should look and feel vastly different come fall. But if one position is in jeopardy, it has to be the quarterback depth behind McCord, right?

This ongoing trend has been experienced by SU fans in recent years with Garrett Shrader. If he was injured or out of the game, the offense didn’t have that same feel that it did when he was playing.

The point being, the Orange need to bring in other quarterbacks who they believe can fit into their system if McCord goes down.

There is plenty of improvement among multiple positions on Brown’s team, but it’s becoming a ride-or-die situation with McCord at the QB spot.

Two seasons ago, Shrader and SU started the year 6-0, but then he got injured during the Notre Dame game. Syracuse went on to lose four straight with Carlos Del-Rio Wilson, SU’s current backup QB.

Of course, every player and quarterback is prone to injury. It happens, and it’s part of the spot. But if McCord does get dinged up or can’t get the nod for whatever reason, don’t expect the Orange to perform better than they have in the last couple of seasons.

This goes hand in hand with the realization that not only is McCord the only viable option at quarterback, but this is a make-or-break standalone season for SU. McCord is in his last year of eligibility.

Coach Brown has to use the best of this situation this year. However, he needs to prepare for the fact that Syracuse needs other options at quarterback this season and a new person to run the offense in 2025.
