Six Syracuse basketball transfers have left the program so far. Some have a destination picked out so far, while others are still in the portal. Let’s run through where the Orange’s outgoing players have, or will, end up.
Maliq Brown: Duke
This one came out of nowhere. The All-ACC Defender seemed to be planning on staying at SU, but then entered the portal and immediately picked up some interest from high-level programs. Maybe the fact that Brown scored a career-high 26 points against Duke back in January helped convince the Blue Devils to bring him in. While he’ll have to fight for minutes down on Tobacco Road, he had to battle to get his minutes at ‘Cuse too.
Justin Taylor: James Madison
It wasn’t too surprising when Taylor entered the portal. The wing was forced to play bigger than he is as SU’s starting power forward. Taylor struggled defensively in that role, and didn’t shoot well either. At JMU in the Sun Belt, he should get to be a bigger part of the game plan.
William Patterson: Undecided
Patterson hasn’t picked a spot yet. Leaving made sense, as he’d likely sit behind Eddie Lampkin and Naheem McLeod this season. However, with rumors swirling that Lampkin could decommit, it’s not out of the question for Patterson to come back to Syracuse.
Peter Carey: Siena
This is a match made in heaven. Carey gets to follow Gerry McNamara, who coached him for two years on the Orange. Plus, Siena should provide less competition for minutes and smaller opposing centers to play against.
Quadir Copeland: McNeese State
McNeese State doesn’t sound like a great destination. However, the Cowboys have a high-profile coach in Will Wade and are coming off an NCAA Tournament berth. It’s not a Power Five conference, but Copeland should be able to truly spread his wings down in Louisiana.
Mounir Hima: Howard
When Hima walked at senior day this year, it seemed to be a signal that he’d leave this offseason. That ended up happening, and the center will finish his college career at Howard.
