Former Syracuse basketball player Oshae Brissett, who just won an NBA championship with the Boston Celtics 4-1 over the Dallas Mavericks, has been invited to play in Canada’s Olympic Training camp ahead of Paris 2024 according to Canada basketball.
The forward became the first former Syracuse player to play in and win the NBA finals since Marty Brynes with the Los Angeles Lakers in 1980. Brisset played 19 minutes in the championship series and scored seven points with three rebounds in three games.
Brissett was a consistent scorer back in the day for the Orange, averaging just under 14 points a game and eight rebounds over 71 games. His journey to becoming an NBA champ after Syracuse has not been easy though.
Brissett entered the NBA Draft after two seasons at SU and went undrafted. Not all hope was lost though, as the Canadian signed a two-year deal with the Toronto Raptors in 2019. After being cut by the Raptors, Brissett signed and played just under two seasons worth of matchups in three years with the Pacers. Following his time in Indiana, Brissett landed with the Celtics, becoming an NBA champion. After all the hardships that Brissett had to go through, he is now finally achieving major success.
He has a chance to keep the good times rolling this summer with Team Canada. Brissett is one of 20 players selected to participate in the training camp. Once the two-week program starting next Friday concludes, the roster will be cut from 20 to 12. The 12 who make it will compete in Paris for a gold medal.
Some of the names headlining the squad for Team Canada are RJ Barrett, Dillon Brooks, Shai Gilgeuous-Alexander, Zach Edey, and Andrew Wiggins among others. Team Canada is led by Brooklyn Nets head coach Jordi Fernandez.
Only time will tell if Brissett will make the 12-team roster headed to Paris for the summer games. Coming off an NBA championship though, all the momentum is on his side headed into training camp.
