Syracuse Football Depth Chart: Three Questions

Syracuse football just released its first depth chart of the season, and therefore, the first depth chart of the Fran Brown era. There were a lot of players that slotted in exactly where we expected them, but still some surprises ahead of SU’s season-opener against Ohio on Saturday.

Where’s Justus Ross Simmons?

Justus Ross-Simmons, a veteran wide receiver transfer from Colorado State, has the talent to appear on the depth chart, or even start for Syracuse football. However, his name isn’t one of the three wide receivers listed. That isn’t because of talent, though. It’s because of health. Ross-Simmons is recovering from a pulled hamstring, which means his availability for this weekend is shaky.

“He’s working. We gotta see what he does,” head coach Fran Brown said. “He just hasn’t been able to get completely healthy. I think he’ll be able to play this week. I’m hopeful, but I’m not completely sure.”

With an open spot for a wide receiver on the depth chart, freshman Emmanuel Ross has stepped up and taken position on the second line.

Defensive Line: Deep or in Deep Trouble?

There are a lot of players listed at defensive line for Syracuse football. Each of the four slots has a starter, then two backups listed. That means 12 players have a decent shot of playing meaningful football for the Orange in the defensive trenches.

This could be great or concerning. It could mean that the ‘Cuse have a lot of talent, so a lot of players deserve reps. On the other hand, it could be an indication that there’s some uncertainty about who’s up to snuff within the group.

Could Malachi James Start at Kick Returner?

Freshman running back Malachi James made news during training camp when his speed during a practice measured at 23.6 miles per hour. That’s faster than any NFL player ran in any game last season. With speed like that, even if there’s ball security issues, you have to consider giving him a chance to get the ball in his hand. When Syracuse football released its depth chart, the starting kick returner was listed as Trebor Pena OR Malachi James. That indicates the rookie might get some opportunities soon.
