Otto’s Army, the leadership of Syracuse’s student section, has been a big part of the Syracuse fandom for years. They constantly get criticized for students leaving games early, showing up late to games, or having smaller showings for less-important games. Some of that criticism is fair. However, Otto’s Army is now being called out for… holding a blue out. That’s right, some Syracuse fans don’t like that the student section will be wearing blue, instead of orange, for the Georgia Tech game on Saturday.
Quite frankly, that’s ridiculous.
Yes, Syracuse’s nickname is the Orange. Orange is also SU’s primary color. However, that doesn’t mean that ‘Cuse fans need to wear the same color to every single game.
Many other schools will have color days for both their primary color and secondary color. Plus, Otto’s Army has been doing it for years. I remember as a freshman going to a white out football game. Guess what? The students liked it, bought in, and there was a good crowd at that game. There have been blue outs before, too. But guess what theme day is most common? You guessed it, orange outs.
Syracuse fans wear orange to a vast majority of games. There’s no harm in mixing it up every once in a while. Blue is SU’s secondary color, after all. Plus, nothing is truly sacred. Before orange and blue, the ‘Cuse were pink and pea green. All things considered, blue isn’t that bad.
Otto’s Army is going to wear blue on Saturday. All of the students will be in a blue out. It would be nice if the other fans joined them. If you want to wear orange, that’s fine. If you want to support the students and wear blue, even better. Either way, the students shouldn’t be criticized for showing up and supporting the team.
