Standouts from Syracuse’s exhibition win over Clarion

Syracuse hitting the century mark and winning by 28 against Division 2 Clarion was the opposite of surprising in SU’s 101-73 exhibition win Saturday.

But the final score didn’t matter at all. It was the first chance to see Syracuce’s 2024-25 squad and a perfect time for overreactions to whether Syracuse will break its March Madness drought (if they play like that every game, they will).

Here’s who impressed the most for Syracuse this weekend:

Donnie Freeman

Syracuse’s highest-rated recruit in history is here, and he is just what fans were hoping for. Freeman’s welcome party began with an electrifying dunk for his first points in an SU jersey. That was the start of a dominating game, where he’d finish with 16 points and seven boards.

Of all the freshmen who made their debuts, Freeman was the most impressive. His scoring presence was felt immediately and he showed he might be the best rebounder on SU this season. The forward even made a three!

If Saturday’s performance was any indicator, Freeman will likely be a one-and-done. Enjoy him in an Orange uniform while you can.

Jaquan Carlos

With Judah Mintz heading to the pros, the biggest question for SU this year was at point guard. Carlos showed Saturday he can patch up that hole pretty well.

The Hostra transfer put together a double-double with 14 points and a team-leading 10 assists. His three steals were also reminiscent of Mintz.

Syracuse should have plenty of weapons this year making a distributor so necessary. Carlos should be able to fill that role perfectly.

Eddie Lampkin

One of SU’s biggest personalities on social media over the offseason, Lampkin finally made his on-court debut and impressed. The big man nearly put up a double-double, with eight points and seven rebounds

His most impressive play, however, may have been when he showed off his passing abilities. After corralling a rebound in the first half, Lampkin threaded the ball outside to Chris Bell, who splashed a three.

Having a true center was a struggle for SU last year, but Lampkin seems to be just that for 2024.
