For the first time since 2011, Syracuse football played a game in the Golden State. This time around, it was for the first time since 1968 with the University Of California. Coming off a disappointing 37-31 loss to Boston College, the Orange handled business and took down the Golden Bears 33-25. Who stood out? Who needs some more work? Let’s dive into it:
Defense: B+
First things first, what a game from this defense. The first half was some of the most complete football I’ve seen this season on both sides of the ball. Against Fernando Mendoza, who entered the day with just two interceptions on the season, doubled it thanks to Marlowe Wax and Davion Kerr. The two-headed monster of Jadyn Ott and Jaivian Thomas did feast on the ground, but a great bounceback for SU. I wish they kept that same dominance all second half, but what can you do. Also, keep Fadil Diggs with a hand in the ground, that guy is a monster when rushing the quarterback.
Offensive Line: A++
LeQuint Allen is so back, ladies and gentlemen. But give this offensive line some flowers today against a stout Cal pass rush. The Orange allowed just ONE SACK, which let Allen feast. 23 rushes for 109 yards and two touchdowns is exactly what the doctor ordered. If the offensive line can keep this up, the Syracuse offense may just be unstoppable, and Allen could be playing on Sundays earlier than we think.
Special Teams: A+
Finally, finally, FINALLY some consistency for this group. Jackson Kennedy has officially become the most efficient kicker on this roster, which absolutely no one expected. Four-for-four, call him a Wendy’s meal. I think I speak for everyone when I say I can finally breathe whenever Syracuse attempts anything special teams-related. Can they keep this up? Only time will tell.
You could argue that this is Syracuse’s best win this season. Going all the way to the West Coast as 10-point underdogs and picking up a convincing win is pretty impressive. Fran Brown can finally shower, and now this team has some serious momentum to finish its season at the JMA Wireless Dome. UConn and then #12 Miami, it’s time to play some spoiler. Also, Syracuse cleans up this weekend, with a Kiyan Anthony commitment and a basketball win. What’s not to love about being orange right now?
