One after another, the exits from Syracuse Men’s Basketball continue. The latest? According to an X post from The Portal Report, Guard Chance Westry.
Unlike some other recent transfers out of Syracuse, like Kyle Cuffe and Chris Bell, Westry barely played this season. After transferring from Auburn two years ago, he was out all of last year and started this season unavailable.
He made three short appearances during the year and down the stretch was unavailable once again. His last appearance came against UAlabany on Dec. 10 and then went radio silent. He didn’t even travel with the team to the ACC Tournament, according to an Instagram story he posted.
So how did a highly touted transfer who was battling injuries turn into this? The simple answer is we have no idea. The university was never really clear to the public on why Westry wasn’t playing, and not much leaked. He certainly showed promise in high school and pre-injury at Auburn.
But at Syracuse…no points and just over 10 total minutes played. Oh well.
Interestingly enough, Westry is repped by The Gazelle Group, who is the official event producer of two events SU played in this year – the Legends Classic and Gotham Classic.
So where does this leave the Orange? Well as Westry barely played, it’s hard to say he would have had any impact for SU next season in the backcourt.
But, the number of scholarship players for SU is shrinking. Elijah Moore, Bell, Cuffe and now Westry are all gone. That leaves just JJ Starling, Donnie Freeman and Petar Majstorvic.
For starters, SU NEEDS to keep all three of those guys. JJ is a leader on what will almost certainly be another young team. Donnie still has the making of a star, especially with the talent coming next year. And Petar is raw but saw some promise.
And then of course, Syracuse has to attack the transfer portal and actually land some guys.
Chance Westry was once one of those transfer gets. But he’ll go down as an Autry transfer fail.
