Well, after one of the more disappointing recent seasons for a Syracuse basketball player, Chris Bell plans on hitting the transfer portal. On3 Sports first reported the news this morning.
While it’s always sad to see a player go, it’s not exactly surprising to see with Bell. Earlier this week, former SU guard Quadir Copeland (whose season came to a close today against Purdue) reposted a photo of Bell. The caption? “See you soon kid.”
Could that be McNeese, where Bell is now? Maybe. It also could be to another ACC school…NC State…where current McNeese coach Will Wade is set to play next year.
So what happened with Bell? Wel, he came into this year with expectations of being one of the most elite three-point shooters in all of the ACC. But things never really fully transpired. Bell had a major drought in December, talked about how he was in his head, and looked disinterested down the stretch as his minutes dipped. After being a double-digit scorer a game last year, he dipped to nine this season.
There was a lot of promise for Bell. He was a true freshman starter for most of Boeheim’s last year. He had some HUGE games last year for the Orange and seemed poised to make an even bigger jump in this next season. But it didn’t pan out. And hence the transfer makes sense.
Where Bell will end up is one question. But the bigger question for SU fans now is where that roster lies for next year. We’re not going to try to crystalball any transfers just yet. But, if all freshmen stay and no one decommits, it’s looking like a YOUNG roster for SU.
JJ will run the one and bring some experience to the backcourt. Past that? It could very well be Elijah Moore, Kiyan Anthony, Sadiq White and Donnie Freeman. All freshmen or sophomores.
Well, that will be something to see. But the one thing we do know. Chris Bell will not be a part of it.
