In today’s high school basketball landscape, it seems like there are a million showcase and all-star games. It’s a bit hard to keep track of, but Syracuse commit (and son of Carmelo) Kiyan Anthony is taking full advantage of it all.
We’ve already written about his elite performance at The Throne Hoops championship a couple of weeks ago, where he took home MVP. And yesterday, in the Jordan Brand Classic, Anthony did it again, dropping 25 points and taking home another MVP award.
The game, which was held in Washington, D.C., featured a pair of highly-touted Syracuse recruits. In addition to Anthony, Sadiq White also suited up in the showcase game. But it was Anthony who stole the show.
The question now? Is Anthony going to be competing for a starting role next year? It’s going to be tight with the increase in transfers. But are there realistically that many better shooting guards better than Anthony? I’m not sure.
It’s dwfinrly time to have that conversation though.
And even more importantly, it seems like Syracuse’s incoming class as a whole – dare my say it – may be actually elite.
We’ve already talked about Anthony and White, who stayed as four-stars in the newest ESPN rankings (Anthony at #35 and White at #27.) But, it’s also important to note that Luke Fennell is now a four-star and Aaron Womack is now a three-star. For a team with some much needed holes to fill, that’s a pretty darn good class.
It’s too early to say anything for sure, and freshmen can be unreliable. But things are looking good in the 3-1-5.
