In today’s College Football world, literally anything can happen. That was fully proved this week when Nico Iamaleava left Syracuse’s week one opponent, reigning College Football Playoff team, Tennessee. The former #2 overall recruit in the Class of 2023 is leaving because of NIL disputes. Reports say that he was only getting paid about two million per year. Many top quarterbacks around the country are paid upwards of four million. This news was truly shocking as Iamaleava is thought of as one of the best quarterbacks in the country.
When lists came out about his potential suitors, the Orange were one of the teams listed as one of the 11 favorites. Even though Rickie Collins was named the starter for Syracuse a few weeks ago, the Orange should go after Iamaleava. The reason for this is pretty simple. The chance to get one of the top QBs in the country is rare. Last season, we saw what Kyle McCord did. Iamaleava is rated even higher and can take the ‘Cuse to the next level.
I believe in Rickie Collins. I think that he has what it takes to be a top half of the ACC starting quarterback. But there’s a difference between a potentially good quarterback and someone who brought Tennesse to a 10-3 record and a spot in the College Football Playoff.
The other issue with Collins is the questions about his character. Those are legitimate and absolutely a bit of a worry. However, star football players are headcases a lot of he time. Fran Brown is the culture guy who can help turn Iamaleava around and truly get the best out of him.
It’s not often you have a chance to go get a potential top 15 pick in the NFL draft. Fran Brown should go out and get one of the best quarterbacks in the country.
