Well, the wait is still on for who will be QB1 for Syracuse Football in week one against Tennessee. Fran Brown may have a decision after the second intersquad scrimmage…but he hasn’t told the public.
So while we all wait for that announcement, at least Syracuse’s defense now knows who it has to prepare for as Tennessee’s QB1. Tennessee has officially announced that Joey Aguilar will be its starting quarterback to begin the 2025 season.
This brings a quarterback battle to a close that began when Nico Iamaleava announced he would be transferring for the 2025-26 season out of the Volunteers’ program.
A self proclaimed dual-threat quarterback, Aguilar begins his time with Tennessee after two seasons with Appalachian State.
At App State, Aguilar was the starting quarterback. And boy did he show out. It took just two seasons for the QB to become fifth all-time in program passing yards, with 6760 yards. That’s Kyle McCord like numbers.
And while he can run the football, his arm is really where he propels. Aguilar has found himself near the top of FBS rankings for passing touchdowns at points in past seasons, and has a real knack for nailing down receivers.
So what does this mean for SU? Well the backfield better get ready for some deep passes. Tennessee is an SEC program that routinely churns out wide receiver talent, and now you have a very capable deep ball threat as well.
What else does this mean? It’s almost time for SU to announce its own QB1. While Fran Brown would love to see as much out of his quarterbacks before making a decision, it is realy getting close to gametime. You want QB1 to have as much time to fully integrate with the offense. So that decision will need to be made soon.
