Syracuse wide receiver Darrell Gill Jr. is fresh off a dominant day against Colgate over the weekend. The junior led all SU receivers with six receptions for 152 yards and two touchdowns.
This included an incredible grab where he leaped up and caught the ball over a Colgate defensive back for a 43-yard touchdown in the first half. The catch caught the attention of Randy Moss and earned the number one play on SportsCenter’s Top 10.
A dominant performance led Gill to become the ACC Receiver of the Week. He’s the first Orange player to earn ACC weekly honors this year.
This recognition comes at a pivotal time as SU is about to embark on a tough stretch of the schedule. Syracuse goes down to Death Valley to meet with Clemson this weekend.
Gill happens to be one of two receivers who played against Clemson the last time the two teams squared off. Gill caught one pass for nine yards from quarterback Garrett Shrader and the other, Dan Villari, hauled in two receptions for 65 yards and a touchdown.
Yes, the turnover of SU’s players and staff has greatly impacted the team in the two years since both squads in Orange met, but Gill might be able to give some sort of insight as to what this Clemson squad brings under Dabo Sweeney as far as tradition, intensity, and culture.
Syracuse lost to Clemson 31-14 two years ago after a 27-21 loss to Clemson in 2022 after an exciting undefeated start to the season.
Saturday brings another opportunity for the Orange to do something magical and make it a ballgame down at Memorial Stadium.
Clemson has began the year 1-2 after a couple close losses against LSU and Georgia Tech.
The two squads clash Saturday at noon.
