Syracuse QB Steve Angeli Out for Season With Torn Achilles

Syracuse quarterback Steve Angeli is out for the remainder of the season, according to Pete Thamel of ESPN.

This is a huge blow for the Orange after the junior began the first three weeks as the nation’s leading passer. It also comes after Angeli threw for 244 yards and two touchdown passes in SU’s 34-21 upset over Clemson yesterday.

The transfer from Notre Dame was hurt on a non-contact lower leg injury late in the third quarter after rolling out of the pocket. It was first established after the game that Angeli would miss at least a couple weeks of action, but that’s turned into the entire season as of today.

Per Thamel, “An MRI has revealed [Angeli] tore his Achilles in Syracuse’s win at Clemson. He expects to have two more years of eligibility, as he expects to qualify for a medical redshirt this season.”

The quarterback battle that went on throughout training camp and at times was deemed “50/50” according to SU head coach Fran Brown ended up with Angeli earning himself the QB1 spot.

Now, it’s back to Rickie Collins to take the reigns for the rest of the season after he joined Syracuse following a transfer from LSU last winter. He was also named the Spring Game starter and the team’s starter in the spring.

It’ll be a full circle moment for Collins, and one that is set to be tough for what lies ahead. Duke visits the Dome on Saturday, and then Syracuse travels to play at SMU the following weekend.

Angeli’s injury comes as a huge devastation for Syracuse after a 3-1 start to the season and a road upset in one of college football’s best environments. It’s time for Collins to show what he’s made of.
