Breaking: Syracuse AD John Wildhack to retire

Breaking: Syracuse athletic director John Wildhack is set to retire on July 1, via sources.

Wildhack has led Syracuse athletics since 2016, arriving on the Hill after a long executive career at ESPN. During his tenure, Syracuse men’s basketball has experienced a gradual decline following its memorable Final Four run in 2017.

Since 2019, the Orange are 116–98, with just one NCAA Tournament appearance in that span. In 2023, just hours after the retirement of legendary head coach Jim Boeheim, Wildhack promoted former Syracuse assistant and alum Adrian Autry to lead the program.

More than halfway through Autry’s third season, Syracuse sits at 47–42 overall, including a 13–11 record this year. With signs pointing toward a potential coaching change after another underwhelming campaign, speculation had grown that Wildhack’s future could also be in question.

Syracuse will start the search for its 12th AD in school history, while simultaneously  looking for a new president after the announced July departure of Kent Syverud.
