Carmelo Anthony Believes in Syracuse’s Next Era

Since his arrival in 2003, Carmelo Anthony has been the heartbeat of Syracuse basketball. When fans think of the Orange, his name comes to mind immediately — not just for his on-court dominance, but for the energy and pride he brings to the program.

Over the past two decades, Carmelo’s influence has been felt everywhere: in the stands, in the locker room, and through the opportunities he’s created for players and staff. But like all of Orange Nation, he’s seen his share of highs, lows, and disappointments since his playing days.

And he hasn’t been afraid to say it. From missed opportunities in the NCAA Tournament to seasons that fell short of expectations, Carmelo has held Syracuse to the standard he helped set. Just last month, during a lopsided loss to UNC, he showed his frustration, commenting “SMH” under an official SU highlight post.

But after the recent hiring of former teammate Gerry McNamara, Carmelo’s tone has shifted — to optimism.

Last week, on the 7PM in Brooklyn with Carmelo Anthony podcast, he expressed confidence in McNamara’s ability to rebuild the program:
“He’s one of the hardest-working guys I’ve ever seen,” Anthony said. “He’s a guy you’ve got to kick out of the gym. I’m excited, because he’s going to bring something different.”

That “different” may be exactly what Syracuse has been missing — a renewed sense of culture and belief.

Carmelo also offered reassurance about his son, Kiyan, who averaged eight points in his freshman season, saying he’ll be staying on the Hill despite transfer portal speculation. Anthony believes McNamara can unlock another level in him:
“There’s a reason people like Ky — he’s going to enhance that. The first thing he’ll do is give him the confidence he needs. I guarantee this summer, Gerry will be in the gym with him.”

“Gerry understands our players,” Carmelo said. “He knows how to challenge them, support them, and help them grow. That’s exactly what Syracuse basketball needs right now.”
