One Last Test for Autry: Fight or Fade in the ACC Tournament?

This afternoon is not just another game for Syracuse Orange men’s basketball.

It may be the final game of Adrian Autry’s tenure.

Syracuse enters the ACC Tournament against SMU Mustangs men’s basketball at 15–16 overall and 6–12 in the ACC, a season that has fallen well short of expectations. Meanwhile SMU sits at 19–12 and 8–10 in conference play, and one of Joe Lunardi’s last teams in the Field of 68.

The real storyline today isn’t seeding or records.

It’s effort.

After months of frustration, defensive breakdowns, and growing fan anger, the biggest question hanging over Syracuse is simple: how hard will they play?

Because in many ways, this game will help define how Autry’s time leading the program is remembered.

If Syracuse competes — if the Orange play smart, have energy, defend, and keep the game tight into the final minutes — Autry may leave with at least one meaningful measure of respect. Players responding to their coach in this final game(s) would suggest that, despite the losses, the locker room never fractured.

In one of The Fizz’s most read stories of the year, Autry already acknowledged that Syracuse was not fully prepared for the modern realities of college basketball — the transfer portal, NIL spending, and constant roster turnover that now define the sport. In that sense, a competitive showing could reinforce the argument that the struggles were structural as much as tactical.

That the foundation shifted beneath the program.

But if this game turns into another blowout, it will be much harder to find those silver linings.

A bad effort today would only deepen the feeling that the program lost its footing entirely under Autry.

There is nothing short of winning the ACC Tourney that can save Autry’s job (we assume). But let’s see whether this final snapshot of the season shows a team that still believed in its coach — or one that had already reached the end.
