Syracuse Football Announces Top Recruit Calvin Russell III Out Indefinitely

There were rumors that Syracuse Football’s 5-star freshman wide receiver Calvin Russell suffered an injury in practice after Syracuse Football head coach Fran Brown ran out of Gerry McNamara’s introductory press conference early yesterday.

Those fears became a reality this morning in a recent statement released by Brown:

“Calvin Russell III suffered an injury in practice that will cause him to miss an indefinite period of time.

I’m confident Calvin will return stronger because of our culture, commitment to our players and the relationship Calvin, his family and I have.

Calvin, best believe Orange Nation’s got your back!”

Although the specific injury and its cause are unknown at this time, the fact that it even requires a statement speaks for itself.

Despite skipping the early signing period, Russell chose Syracuse over the likes of Michigan and Miami. The 6 ‘6 wideout was the No. 36 player in ESPN’s latest rankings for the 2026 class, and SU’s highest ranked recruit in nearly 2 decades.

Russell had just joined football practices after finishing the season with Syracuse Men’s Basketball. In his one appearance for Adrian Autry’s squad he scored three points against NC State.

Now, he’s out for the foreseeable future.

The freshman was expected to be one of quarterback Steve Angeli’s top weapons this upcoming season, with Darrell Gill Jr. and Johntay Cook transferring to Ole Miss.

It’s a highly-unfortunate break for a ‘Cuse squad that plays its spring game in just two weeks.

The expectation is that Fran Brown will speak on the recent news at tomorrow’s practice.
