Bryan Hodgson is taking another beating on social media.
And it keeps looking better — at least in perception — for Syracuse Orange men’s basketball.
Just weeks ago, Hodgson was the name. The rising star. The guy Syracuse fans were obsessing over as the potential savior of the program. When it appeared he removed himself from contention — or turned the job down — it felt like a gut punch.
Now?
It’s the best thing that could’ve happened.
Because after the recycled press conference joke made the rounds, Hodgson is now catching heat from one of the most respected voices in college basketball: Jay Bilas.
And Bilas didn’t exactly dance around it as the ESPN panel was discussing the coaching carousel in the modern college basketball landscape.
“We had a coach earlier this year finish the season and say stay away from my players… don’t tamper with my players… and he left, took another job. So it’s okay if they tamper with you.”
Direct shot at Hodgson’s hypocrisy. He talked tough, but ultimately didn’t back it up with his own actions.
Last month at South Florida Bulls men’s basketball, Hodgson made headlines with an all-time fiery anti-tampering rant:
“Any of these clowns that think they’re gonna reach out before the season ends… I will find you. I’m not like the rest of these coaches… I will have face-to-face conversations.”
At the time, it played well. Passion. Protectiveness. Old-school edge.
But then he left for another job — Providence Friars men’s basketball — and the optics flip instantly.
The same system you were railing against?
You’re now benefiting from.
So we have:
- The recycled intro press conference moment
- The questions about whether Hodgson may have manipulated Syracuse for a profile boost
- And now a public callout from a national analyst
…it paints a picture.
Meanwhile, Syracuse lands Gerry McNamara — a program fit, a unifier, someone who doesn’t need to manufacture moments or explain contradictions.
Because in today’s college basketball world, it’s not just about whether a coach can win.
It’s about how they carry it.
And right now, Hodgson isn’t exactly passing that test.
