Poliquin Earns National Rip Job

Hey, The Fizz has been critical of Bud Poliquin before. His column upon the firing of Groobers has been the target of backlash on this site for almost two years now. It was a misguided attempt to avoid piling on a coach who had already hanged himself with a truck full of losses over the previous four years. But when the symbol for Syracuse athletic ineptitude is finally axed after a 24-month death march, defending him and his wife for spending time at soup kitchens seemed feeble and delusional and borderline unprofessional.

Then again, Syracuse is not a big market and the Post-Standard is not a big paper and having one columnist stay and grind and write about SU athletics for this long says something about loyalty (I think). Despite daily salvos launched against his writing by readers for two decades, no one has ever really had a bad word to say about Bud as a person.

By all accounts, he’s a warm, gentle guy who just so happens to write a handful of psuedo-controversial columns that garner some venom from CNY fans. But hey, what long-time columnist doesn’t?

But when Deadspin.com picked up his latest… ahem… piece, the world was once again laughing at Syracuse.

“The Worst Column Ever By Someone Not Named Bill Plaschke. A Syracuse columnist made a factual error. His next column¬†consists solely of a correction repeated 50 times, √† la classroom chalkboard.¬†Meh, it’s still better than Bleacher Report.”

I suppose we should give credit for Bud recognizing a (fairly large) mistake and having some fun with it.

Although, copy and pasting a sentence 50x doesn’t exactly stir comparisons to Grantland Rice and Damon Runyan.

Yup, that’s our Bud.
