Can SU be 3-1 with a Win this Week?

As SU prepare to play Akron in the first game, the “bowl is the goal” talk began to come through once more.

The D.O.’s Andrew John mentions it.

“If this year is to be any different for SU, it begins with this weekend’s visit to Akron, Ohio.”

He has two first names. You have to believe him.

But in all seriousness, the Orange has officially put the target on their back. Derrell smith mentions it in our most recent FizzCast.

Doug Marrone told everyone.

So you gotta damn well believe that this where it all starts.

A win against the Zips puts SU into a formidable position. Consider it this way: beat Akron, and the team’s 1-0. Take a good fight to Washington, and the team’s 1-1 with some confidence after hopefully holding Jake Locker to just 300 yards.

Book Colgate and Maine back-to-back, and you realistically have 3-1 painted on your chests heading into a very, very different South Florida program under first-year head coach Skip Holtz.

Bud Poliquin argues that SU needs more fans to get things going. If the Orange can get those early wins, the fans will come on their own. The simple fact is, attendance really doesn’t factor in to the first third of the schedule.

SU is set up to have positive vibes from nothing other than it’s schedule of three winnable games in the first month of the season. And it starts on Saturday.
