Former Fizz is a new interview series where we talk with previous Orange Fizz staff writers about Syracuse sports from when they were on campus. Topics include specific players and games, special memories and of course Jim Boeheim throughout the years. You can listen to all of the episodes on the Orange Fizz SoundCloud or orangefizz.net.
On the final episode, Seth Goldberg joins as the special guest. Seth called Syracuse home from 2012-2016 when he attended SU and still calls it home because he is currently a host at ESPN Syracuse. He tests his knowledge of Orange sports in a little game of trivia and tells his favorite Boeheim story. The interview is below, followed by an abbreviated Q&A from the discussion. We hope you enjoy!

QUESTION: What was it like going from Doug Marrone to Scott Shafer?
ANSWER: It was really interesting because it was a late change and Marrone was coming off a widely successful year. It seemed like Syracuse wanted to stay with the same thing and hire from within and that’s why Shafer got hired. He was a great coordinator, but he just wasn’t cut out for a head coaching job.
QUESTION: Were you happy that Shafer was fired and who did you want to replace him?
ANSWER: I’m not sure if I would say I was happy, but the writing was on the wall and the move had to happen. As for who I wanted to take over, it was Dino Babers or Scott Frost. So I was happy with the Dino hire.
QUESTION: What was the most impressive performance from an individual football player you remember from when you were a student?
ANSWER: Terrel Hunt put together a couple great games, especially the Texas Bowl. Plus there were probably some good games from the linebackers because that was the strength of the Syracuse team back then. Also, the Pinstripe Bowl from Prince-Tyson Gulley and Jerome Smith was impressive. Of course, Ryan Nassib was consistently great.
QUESTION: If you could put together a starting five of Syracuse basketball players that played while you were a student, who would be in it?
ANSWER: Michael Carter Williams, Tyler Ennis, CJ Fair, Tyler Lydon, Rakeem Christmas
QUESTION: Do you have any classic Jim Boeheim stories from when you were a student at SU?
ANSWER: The sanctions were announced against Syracuse in 2015 right before a game and after it, Boeheim didn’t hold a press conference. So I thought we wouldn’t hear from him until next season’s media day, but I remember getting invited to a random press conference in the Spring when the season was already over. It was a marathon press conference, which never happens, and Boeheim answered everyone’s questions for probably an hour.
