What is NFL Handicap Betting? Beginner’s Guide

As a beginner, you might be a little confused about handicap betting.

From stadiums to X (formerly known as Twitter), all you hear NFL fans talking about is the handicap bets that they’ve been placing — but what is NFL handicap betting?

It’s a great question that thousands of fans ask every single week. Luckily, this guide is going to explain to you exactly how NFL handicap betting works and the ways that you can benefit from it.

Here we go.

What is NFL Handicap Betting?

NFL handicap betting is when you bet on ‘+’ or ‘-‘ points to be applied to an NFL team at the end of the game. After the points have been applied, you’ll then win based on the final handicap result.

NFL Handicap Betting Example

As an example, let’s say that the Chiefs are playing the Broncos and your chosen sportsbook lists the Broncos with a +7 handicap. You then decide to bet on the Broncos to win using the +7 handicap. The final score of the game is Chiefs 20-15 Broncos. When you apply the +7 handicap points to the Broncos, this makes the score Chiefs 20-22 Broncos, meaning you win your handicap bet!

Where to Place a Handicap Bet

If the concept of a handicap bet sounds exciting to you, then choose from the no deposit promos on Gamble USA. You’ll then be able to join one of the best US sportsbooks and receive a bonus for doing it. Once your account is fired up, all you’ll need to do is find an NFL game to bet on and choose your handicap. Yes, it’s really that easy. All NFL games come with handicap options, so take a careful look through the different odds before choosing your handicap.

What’s the Purpose of Handicap Betting?

Simply put, handicap bets even up the playing field. With an active handicap bet, you can make the underdog more likely to win, which boosts the excitement. For example, your NFL team might be an underdog against one of the big hitters like the Kansas City Chiefs, who just won the Super Bowl. However, with a handicap in place, they’ll no longer be the underdogs and you can (more comfortably) bet on your team to win.

Rise of NFL Handicap Betting — The Present and Future of NFL Betting

In the US, there are now over 25 million online sports bettors (Statista). A key driver behind this has been the surge in popularity of handicap betting, which is significantly more fun than the traditional ‘moneyline’ bet that NFL fans have been placing for decades. So, whether you’re a total beginner or an experienced sports bettor, you can switch to handicap bets if you want to make the experience a little more interesting next season after the NFL draft. Just remember to bet smartly and always analyse the realistic chance of your handicap bet being successful before placing it.
