Ladies and gentlemen, as you know it’s May. A time when football is quiet, basketball AAU’s haven’t started yet, and everyone is shipping out after finals.
It’s also a time when something magical happens: we all follow lacrosse again!¬†The Fizz has chronicled the SU fan’s interest before: pay attention casually until May, then on Memorial Weekend, watch the magic unfold.
We here at The Fizz will try to avoid giving you the team breakdowns and stats while explaining the season (Orange 44 does a good job at that). Instead, we’ll sum up this team succinctly.
‘Cuse is good. Damn good. I’ve been around the team all year, and they couldn’t look any better right now.
They had an interesting situation unfold earlier in the season:¬†Tim Desko got cracked outside of Mully’s Bar, but the team said it wasn’t his fault.
Well, except for being at a Lemoyne bar in-season. He missed a few games, and then turned his season into a highlight reel, making Sportscenter’s Top-10 for some crazy goals.
The Orange looks primed once again for its annual pilgrimage to the Final Four and yours truly will be there in Baltimore if it happens.
But the biggest question remaining is how Syracuse handles whipping Virginia in a rematch. Most years it’s the Cavaliers who win the regular season match, with the ‘Cuse coming away with a win late in the playoffs (which always further sweetens the revenge).
The death of Yeardley Love, and subsequent arrest of George Huguely, victory may not be as tasty. Simply put, the lacrosse world is in disarray from this horrific situation.
For both on-field and off-field reasons, it probably would be best not to jump in the middle of such sensitive circumstances. However, SU and UVA again are on opposite sides of the bracket.
If they meet, it’ll be on Memorial day. The Fizz will be there and we’ll all be watching.
