Syracuse Football Spring Game: Angeli Returns After Torn Achilles, But Offensive Concerns Loom for Orange in 2026 Season

Steve Angeli led all of college football in passing yards before he went down with a torn Achillies against Clemson last season.

In his absence, the team failed to find a quarterback play competent enough to even keep the team competitive. As a result, the team spiraled, losing each of its last 8 games to close out an ugly campaign.

But in Syracuse Football’s spring game this past weekend, Orange Nation saw its quarterback in full pads for the first time since his devastating injury in Death Valley. And despite not getting any real in-game action, he did throw a touchdown – albeit to a fan.

But while Angeli’s return provides hope for a more successful season for SU, one thing is clear. It’s a new look offense this season, and the quarterback will have to adjust to a brand-new cast of characters.

Starting with the wideouts, the ‘Cuse lost top receivers Johntay Cook and Darrell Gill Jr. to the transfer portal, as well as Justus Ross-Simmons to graduation. Additionally, its unclear how much we’ll see out of Calvin Russell considering his Achillies injury suffered in practice.

On top of the losses at wide receiver, running back Yasin Willis left for Kansas in the transfer portal and tight end Dan Villari is out of eligibility.

All said, the offensive display was very underwhelming in the spring game. But with Angeli back at the helm soon, the Orange will have to hope he has a strong return and that his production can bring success this season.
