When four-star running back Elijah Kimble committed to Syracuse earlier this month, the obvious headline was that the Orange landed the No. 1 player in New York.
But his biggest impact may come long before he ever carries the football inside the JMA Wireless Dome.
He may have just made staying home cool again.
For years, Syracuse has watched the Empire State’s best prospects leave for Penn State, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Michigan and other national powers. Keeping New York’s elite talent home has been more of a slogan than a reality.
Now that may be changing.
One of the state’s 2027 prospects, Dontre Hampton, was recently asked about Kimble’s commitment.
His answer should make Orange fans smile.
“I think that’s a great thing keeping the best players at home right in Syracuse. I think Elijah Kimble staying home is definitely a smart move.”
Temple offered him first, then Syracuse followed. Hampton is one of Western New York’s top prospects, and delivered a 7-touchdown performance alongside teammate Jimmy Valentine to lead the Tigers past Lancaster in the Section VI Class AA Championship.
He had a huge game in the NYSPHSAA state semifinals where he recorded a 58-yard rushing performance and caught an 87-yard touchdown pass for Bennett HS.
And Hampton isn’t alone.
Another 2028 New York prospect, Long Island offensive lineman Andrew Johnstone, sees the same trend developing.
“I think that Syracuse recruiting New York is a smart move. I feel as if New York is an overlooked state when it comes to football. New York has some players who can play at the next level.”
Those comments validate exactly what Fran Brown has preached since arriving at Syracuse.
Recruit the Northeast.
Keep the best players home.
Kimble wasn’t just another commitment. He picked Syracuse over more than three dozen scholarship offers, including national brands, becoming the highest-ranked player in New York to stay home in years.
Now younger recruits are openly pointing to that decision as something they admire.
Sometimes one player gives everyone else permission to make the same choice.
Because landing Elijah Kimble was one win.
Convincing the next generation that staying home is the new standard?
That could transform Syracuse football for years to come.
