Fran Brown doesn’t care what Las Vegas thinks.
He cares what Mr. Joseph thinks.
In an exclusive sit-down interview with Orange Fizz inside Syracuse football’s new operations facility, D.A. asked Brown whether preseason projections of just 4.5 wins motivate him (13:38 mark in the video).
His answer had nothing to do with oddsmakers.
Instead, he told one of the most remarkable stories you’ll hear from a college football coach.
After Summer Slam Cuse, Brown noticed a familiar face.
Mr. Joseph.
A 76-year-old lifelong Syracuse fan.
Rather than letting him catch the bus home from Skaneateles, Brown had another idea.
“When I seen him, I told him, ‘Hop in the car. We’ll drive you back.'”
That alone would’ve been memorable.
It gets even better.
Brown bought him dinner.
KFC.
And during the ride, he didn’t spend the time talking about himself.
He spent it asking Mr. Joseph about Syracuse football.
“I was asking him, ‘What made Coach Mac good? What made this coach good? Why was this running back good? Why was Don McPherson good?'”

Brown explained why the relationship means so much to him.
Mr. Joseph has been there through it all.
He watched Jim Brown play.
He attended Fran Brown’s introductory press conference.
He saved his money to travel to Clemson, where Syracuse pulled off one of the biggest wins of Brown’s tenure.
“He told me he cried. That meant a lot to him.”
Then Brown shared the quote that hit hardest.
“He feels in his heart that he’s going to see two national championships before he leaves this Earth.”
One in 1959. One is still to come.
That’s the fan Brown coaches for.
Not Vegas.
Not preseason magazines.
Mr. Joseph.
This Is Why Syracuse Has Bought In
Brown could have answered the question by saying preseason predictions don’t matter.
Instead, he told a story that explains everything about why Syracuse fans have embraced him.
He respects the people who built and supported this program decades before he arrived.
He listens to them.
He learns from them.
He values them.
Even after a long fundraising event, Brown didn’t rush home.
He drove an elderly fan home, bought him dinner, and listened to stories about Jim Brown, Ben Schwartzwalder, Dick MacPherson and Syracuse football history.
That’s not a publicity stunt.
How many times has something like this happened and no one heard about it?
He told it because, to him, Mr. Joseph matters more than any betting line.
Maybe that’s why Syracuse feels different these days.
