Gerry McNamara has always been intense.
It fueled him as a player, made him one of the most beloved figures in Syracuse basketball history and now drives him as the man responsible for restoring the program.
But one thing he said at Summer Slam Cuse made me pause.
“This team is gonna change the trajectory of the program. We’re gonna do it. And we’re gonna do it quick.”
I immediately typed it in my phone so I wouldn’t forget it.
Because that’s beyond normal optimism. And there’s more than a few college basketball pundits who remain skeptical about the talent he brought in.
McNamara is telling Syracuse fans the trajectory of the program will change — and it will happen quickly. Like THIS season.
That’s an enormous promise.
Throughout the night, G-Mac spoke about everything Syracuse University has given him. The school gave him an education, a basketball career, a home and a permanent connection to a city that still adores him more than two decades later.
Now he believes he owes something back.
To the university. To the city. To the fans.
And what makes McNamara so mesmerizing right now is that he isn’t managing expectations.
He’s raising them.
There’s a much safer way to take this job.
Talk about patience. Talk about the changing landscape of college basketball. Talk about building the roster over several recruiting cycles.
McNamara isn’t doing that.
He’s essentially saying: We’re fixing this now.
That’s exhilarating. It’s also gutsy.
Gerry could’ve remained universally beloved forever because of 2003, the Big East Tournament heroics and all those unforgettable shots. He was a long time assistant under Boeheim. Taking this job already put some of that mythology at risk.
Now he’s attaching his reputation to an immediate turnaround.
And two Syracuse legends reinforced just how much belief surrounds him.
At the end of the night, Carmelo Anthony perfectly captured the excitement:
“Gerry, welcome f*ing back!”
Jim Boeheim went even further.
“Gerry was the only guy who could unite us. We should be grateful for that.”
G-Mac believes, so it’s hard not to follow his vision. But we’re talking… this year?
Syracuse fans learned something about Gerry McNamara a long time ago.
He’s never been afraid to take the big shot.
