How Syracuse Lost BOTH Stephon Marbury and God Shammgod

God Shammgod’s WILD Big East Stories Will Blow Your Mind 💣🏀

For Syracuse fans who still romanticize the golden era of Big East Conference basketball, this is the kind of recruiting story that will stop you cold.

God Shammgod was ready to commit to Syracuse Orange men’s basketball.

He wanted to.

And in one stunning twist, Stephon Marbury cost the Orange not just himself…

…but Shammgod too.

In an incredible anecdote told to the Orange Fizz (short version) — fans can watch the entire interview in full here with so many memories of the old Big East wars — the former Providence star and current Orlando Magic assistant told the wild recruiting story behind one of Syracuse basketball’s greatest “what ifs.”

Like so many elite New York City guards of that era, both Shammgod and Marbury idolized Dwayne ‘Pearl’ Washington.

“Me and Steph… we both looked up to Pearl Washington,” Shammgod said.

That made Syracuse incredibly attractive.

“I went to Syracuse for a visit, and I was like, ‘Man, I’m ready to sign right now at Syracuse.’”

The #2 player in that class was prepared to commit on the spot.

But Syracuse wasn’t simply recruiting Shammgod. They wanted the #1 player as well.

The Orange wanted both and they had already put in years with Marbury.

The vision was pairing two legendary NYC guards together in the same backcourt.

“They was like, ‘We want you to sign, but we’ve been recruiting Steph since sixth grade… y’all both can play together,’” because they were AAU teammates and friends.

That was the turning point.

Shammgod wanted certainty. He wanted to know he was the guy.

“AAU is different from college,” he remembered thinking.

And when Syracuse waiting on Marbury’s decision, he walked.

“I signed with Providence on Tuesday… and Steph signed with Georgia Tech on Thursday,” Shammgod says laughingly.

That is a dagger.

Syracuse waited on Marbury. He chose to follow Kenny Anderson’s path.

And because the Orange were trying to land both, they lost both.

One recruiting strategy cost Syracuse two iconic guards.

Shammgod never forgot it.

“My first Big East game was against Syracuse, and I had 20 points.”

Then he made sure the Jm Boeheim heard about it.

“I was yelling, ‘I told you… you should have took me.’”

Vintage Big East recruiting wars.

The alternate history is staggering.

Syracuse had Jason Hart lead the offense during that era, but one can’t help but wonder what the Orange would have looked like with the man who perfected the “crossover” dribble. And if Syracuse somehow landed both Marbury and Shammgod, that would’ve been game over.

Instead, one decision tied to Marbury left the Orange empty-handed.

And decades later, it remains one of Syracuse basketball’s great recruiting what-ifs.
