ESPN updated its top 100 rankings for the Class of 2019 on Friday and it should put a smile on plenty of SU fans faces. 2019 point guard commit Brycen Goodine has jumped all the way to #65 in the latest rankings. The 6-4 combo guard from St Andrews in Rhode Island wasn’t even ranked in the previous edition of the ESPN 100. However, during the in-between-time, Goodine raised his stock by balling out for the Boston Amatuer Basketball Club in the Nike EYBL circuit and reeling in the Rhode Island Gatorade Player of the Year award.
In 31 games on the Nike EYBL circuit, Goodine was clearly the best player on his team. The SU commit averaged 19.2 points per game and shot 38% from downtown. Over a two game-stretch in the middle of the season, Goodine went 10-17 from three-point territory and followed a 28 point outing with his season-high 31 point outburst on the next night.
To compare Goodine to former SU point guard Michael-Carter-Williams seems lazy. Especially, considering MCW also played his high-school ball at St Andrews–the same school as the 2019 commit. However, Goodine, while only listed at 6-4 compared to Carter-Williams‚Äô 6-6 frame, also has long arms and a lanky stature that should be perfect for the top of the zone like MCW was. Offensively, Carter-Williams was a more mature ball-handler and driver at Goodine‚Äôs age but didn‚Äôt have his range and three-point shooting stroke.
Granted, Goodines statistics are a little inflated because he was dominating the ball for BABC this summer. But, clearly he has shined since giving Syracuse the verbal commitment and this updated ESPN ranking further proves he could be one of the steals of the 2019 class.
