The Fizz has spoken to Jawan Simmons and got the latest on his recruitment and SU is not in the mix.

We spotlighted CNY-native Simmons in late-July [see 7.29.09], since the Orange had startlingly not offered him a scholarship, yet UConn, Rutgers and Pitt had all shown interest.

Simmons is a 6’4″ quarterback from Nottingham High School and rumors had swirled earlier in the summer he had received an offer from Syracuse. But that was never actually the case.

When the ‘Cuse signed Jonny Miller it gave them two quarterbacks on the 2010 roster, effectively ending “hometown hero” chances with the three-star prospect.

Simmons seemed pretty upbeat when we I spoke with him about his college list. He believes Temple will give him an offer within the next month or so, and then the recruiting battle will heat up around January.

He also says he’s still interested in Connecticut. According to Simmons, head coach Randy Edsall called him personally and expressed interest. Imagine that; a kid who grows up not 25 blocks from The Dome goes and plays for the Huskies.

Granted, he is a raw player who fits the “project” mold, but he’s also a good kid (he worked a polling place election night) and has the physical tools.

This week just gets better and better.
