Yep. You heard that right. Liberty, a team that’s three years removed from even joining the Football Bowl Subdivision embarrassed Syracuse. The Flames looked like the team that’s part of a power 5 conference and despite its best running back not playing a single down, SU got walloped on the ground.
SU’s run defense woes are beginning to become a trend. Liberty ran for 338 yards between Shedro Louis, Malik Willis, and Peytton Pickett. Louis and Pickett went for over 100 apiece and at times were untouched.
Offensively, a mixed bag today. Syracuse had no choice but to play senior Rex Culpepper with Tommy DeVito seemingly out for the year with an injury. Culpepper was 19/40 for 211 yards with 3 TD’s and 1 INT. Overall, he played well for his first collegiate start. As for the running game, Sean Tucker hit the century mark once again. The true freshman had 21 carries for 111 yards and 5.3 per carry. Thirty-four may have been one of the lone bright spots for Syracuse today.
Year 6 in the Dino Babers era and this is where the program is, losing games to non-power 5 teams. Despite all the injuries and excuses this team can hide behind this loss is unacceptable. The lack of depth this team has at key positions is just horrendous and at a school in the ACC nonetheless.
Nobody on the Fizz staff thought this game would even happen at the beginning of the year, and maybe we wish it stayed that way. Liberty moves to 5-0 on the year, Syracuse will get a chance for revenge next year in the Loud House but for now, there are more pressing concerns. SU goes on the road next week to Clemson, a team that just beat Georgia Tech 73-7, woof.
