Cooney’s Coach to Fizz: SU is Favorite

Cooney’s coach: “As for the recruiting, the phone continues to ring but I believe that Syracuse is the favorite.”

The freshman class of 2014 (writing that makes me feel old) is locked and loaded for SU on the football side. Meantime, life is obviously good in the land of basketball recruits as well.

Back in October we talked to junior sharpshooter Trevor Cooney and his Coach Stan Waterman from the Sanford School in Delaware, just before the high school season started.

Now it’s underway and Trevor is still killing it on the court. Waterman tells¬†The Fizz via email:

“As of the moment we are 14 – 0 and playing very well. Trevor scored 21 points in a win on Saturday, hitting 5 three-pointers and a vicious alley-oop dunk.”

Kid’s got ups.

But wait, there’s more! Waterman confirmed Cooney was on campus with his parents for the Marquette game on January 23rd. Definitely not the best game to pick out of the 22 this year, but it hasn’t seemed to hurt according to Waterman:

“As for the recruiting, the phone continues to ring but I believe that Syracuse is the favorite.”

Cooney’s still got a lot of time to go before he has to make a decision, and has¬†offers from all over the place including Villanova, Pitt and Maryland.

However, Cooney’s made a handful of trips to attend games (Notre Dame last year, Marquette this year) and has said he has a great relationship with Mike Hopkins.

Can Hop do it again?
